I have a 98 Mauser in 244 Rem ie 6mm Remington with a screwed up chamber, somebody started something and didn't finish, so I acquired a 243 barrel, and before i acquired the barrel, I put a couple of rounds in the magazine and the bolt picked them perfectly and started them into the chamber partially, I was just checking the pickup from the box/extractor etc. not trying to fully chamber them. Am I missing something here or is this a perfect swap out in caliber with a 98 action.

I still have a spare 98 action lurking in case I ever see a legitimate 6MM Rem. barrel appear to use up the ammo I had at the ready LOL

If it feeds, then sure. For the uninitiated, getting short fat cases like the .243 and .308 to feed can be a challenge in a 98. I prefer the 6mm Rem. Got a fast twist 6mm barrel on the way.

I agree, the 6mm Rem is a better choice all around.

Love that cartridge.

z1r is correct and so is Montana Man.

I like a 243 but when using a Mauser the 6MM Rem (a 7X57 necked down) is a drop in with no action or magazine work needed at all, and the velocities from the 6MM Rem are a bit higher too.

Overall there is no finer 6MM bore hunting cartridge then the 6MM Remington.

I will keep my eyes out maybe i will come across something in 6mm for this spare action I have, I really liked the idea of 6mm but somebody had really bubba'd the chamber, must of been a partial reaming that was not complete or something, I was doing some research on the 6mm and i was really kinda excited to see what I could make it do before I discovered the chamber issue.

Point wel taken on the short fat cases such as the 308 in the 98, I have couple of those and both took alot of good gunsmithing to get them to chamber things reasonably well, I would not say either is silky smooth, know I do have V-24 that was originally a 22-250 when I scored it cheap and rebarreled to a 260 Rem, and that one is smoooooth.

Can you do a 6 Rem Ackley? Or just get the barrel set back to nicer metal?

Good evening to you sir, I hope the day down in Colorado treated you well.

Hopefully it's okay if a garage level gun plumber offers you a hearty "Amen" to your thought about it being a bit of a challenge.

A now long passed on shooting and gun plumbing mentor had a near new Parker Hale so Santa Barbara action in either .308 or .243, I forget which that just didn't feed for beans from either side. We fooled with different followers, with different magazine springs, polished this rail a wee bit, then that one. Finally it fed better but my goodness it resisted with great determination.

The idea to try a test dummy round or three is always a great idea in my experience.

When John Barsness recommended I do that with a 98 that was first a .30-06, then a .270, I then tried some 6.5x55's and happily it fed them better than the previous two. That helped cement the decision to have that chambering as its new barrel.

Thanks again for the good suggestions.

All the best.

Dwayne

The rebarrel is complete the 6mm is now a 243, swapped barrels, check the head space with the go no gauges, we have a winner, scope next off to the range and we will see how things proceed.
