I am confused

I thought a 336 A was a rifle?

This looks like a RC waffle top?

Yes a waffletop....one of the photos was supposed to show it but clearly a mediocre picture....I read that this lever gun because of the E in the serial number, was made in 1948...

The model A has a 24 inch barrel and a end cap on the fore arm I believe.

A waffle top is marlins in action 336 built pre drilled and tapped models. ( about 1953?)

I think you might own a carbine …..shorter barrel, full mag tube, and no end cap on the fore arm.

It looks like you have a very desirable Marlin. But I need to see a photo of the full firearm to tell the model.

I think you have a 336 R/C.

If it were mine I would need $1600 shipped to give it up.

This is a Marlin 336A

They also had a less expensive 336a/336as,with birch stock, 20" stock full mag tube. I can't recall the year of intro. The waffle tops were 336A (rifle) 336RC (regular carbine) and336SC (sporting carbine) I think as mentioned yours is an RC. Very nice gun!

1948 was the year they transitioned from the model 36 to the 336 designation. It's possible that your gun was a transition gun, as 1948 was the first year of the rifle, also. Your rifle should have ballard (cut) rifleing. I believe you have a rare gun, I have never seen one. You might be able to find more info on the Marlin collecors forum. Good luck!

Odd that the forend band is over top the barrel markings. Is that common on the RC?

Good catch! I wonder if it was rebarreled at some point? If it's button rifled, (micro-groove), it's not the original barrel. The mystery deepens!

If you look on the classifieds there is another 336 A that has a short barrel.

Perhaps cutting barrels was a “ thing” in the day.

I have a E prefix 336 RC that is marked RC

I have two 336A's that are marked A. One is a E prefix and the other is a J prefix.

On the 336A's, there is no barrel band over the barrel.

None of the barrel markings are near where they would be covered by a barrel band.

It’s hard to say what the value is on a 336 I went to the Tulsa show a couple weeks ago. There were well over fifty JM Marlins there. I was looking for a 32 Win Special waffle top and didn’t find one. I cruised the aisles and looked at pretty much every 336. There were only two that I saw that were under $1,200.
There were few Remington Marlins and I believe zero Ruger Marlins.
I sold my 32 Special brass and dies, so I’m not in the market for a 32 anymore. ( I had sold my pre-64 32 earlier. )

I don’t go to Gun Broker any more and stopped selling there quite a while ago when they wanted to know personal bank information. They want too much of a cut besides.

I looked at Guns International for prices on 336’s. Two were under $1,000 - both 30-30’s. Most were much higher. I didn’t see any 32 Special Waffle tops and there were few 32’s.

It all boils down to one thing, I guess. The rifle is worth what the purchaser is willing to pay.

I’m certainly not a collector of Marlin 336’s having only a couple and a couple Remington Marlins. Collector value means very little to me, how well a rifle shoots, how it handles are most important. But I’m not going to carry a rusty old gun and a gun that Buddha destroyed either. I collect other guns or have so in the past. Now I’m getting long in the tooth and am trying to sell one at a time and I’ve gotten fond of the ones I have and it’s not easy.

Maybe put the rifle up for sale at a price you’d be happy with??? Be aware there are a few scum that have joined 24hourcampfire that may want to destroy your sales.
