1 1/2” for the posts, braced with 1”.

Square tubing might be cheaper than pipe, always been a pipe guy, since I could get it for free, especially if we were doing a remodel job.

Thank you, it’s all part of the plumbing-pipefitting trade I learned. I bet there are plenty things you all can do that I cannot. I don’t like things with little pieces. The bigger and heavier it is, the more I like it. I liked utility work, big excavators, laying pipe with cranes, etc. I liked organizing-cordinating the equipment, materials, laying out the work. Working on a little carburetor, wouldn’t be long I’d be beating the crap out of it with a hammer.

Yes, they will!!! We’ve had a couple of stands where buzzards got in and it was……NAAAAASTEEE!!! 🤢What we’ve done the last two years is, at the end of the season, to staple some plastic, 1” screen to cover the windows. Works great. It’s almost like chicken wire but it’s plastic.

We had one stand where a barn owl raised a brood of chicks two years in a row. Another 🤢

We leave them buttoned up until the next season and first guy to hunt the stand uses a screwdriver or pliers to pull the staples and roll up the screen.

Bad thing about owls getting in they sure do leave a lot of crap and bones/hair on the floor.

Hard to be quiet with crunchy things in the dark.

Owls are bad, buzzards are worse, hard to get the smell out

I have a couple box blinds with Plexiglas windows. it works great. keep it buttoned up and they are always clean and critter free. It seems like there is never enough time at hunt camp to get things done. Definitely have to address the open windows.

I had an east Texas stand I found and fixed up, it was about 3 feet off the ground, I put a new roof, new door, etc. I cut some notched pieces of plywood to put on each side of each window. They were notched for a 2x2. This 2x2 in each window kept the buzzards and owls out. I took buzzard bars out when I got in the stand to hunt. I have the 2x2’s in the boxes below temporarily un til I got the glass in them

I actually enjoy being in the open, and have the clothes needed for any weather, plus boxes aren’t an option where I hunt. I have some ground-level tree seats tucked away in good spots on that public land, as well as several treestands. Need to remove one of the old stands and replace it with the hang-on I have nearby. Those hang-ons are pretty low, about 10’ to the platform, but they get me over the cover. The ladders are 15’ and well secured, but it’s said most whoopsies occur ascending or descending. I always wear a harness and am damn careful going up and down, but this coming season may be my last aloft. Terrain where I hunt is such that natural elevated positions are pretty easy to find. In ten seasons on that WMA I’ve taken a dozen deer, five from the ground IIRC.
