Both rifles have cheek rest that is bolted very close to the rear of the stock. I need to shorten LOP by 1/2". Seems like cutting the stock would be complicated. Butt pad is 1" thick. Is my best option a thinner pad or is there a better alternative - besides grow longer arms?

I think I would try the thinner pad first. I did cut down a laminated Mini 14 stock on my table saw by 5/8 of an inch. It is a tad shorter than my M1 Garand stock but it is longer than my M1 Carbine stock. I think I found a good compromise. But, I think the secret in your case is a thinner butt pad.

Could try a flip flop pad.
$5 buys the material for numerous ones.

A cheap way to experiment, you might even just leave it.

I guess it depends on the cartridge in question on going to a thinner pad. I had the LR stalker in 6.5 PRC and don't remember if I ever took off the recoil pad but I believe they have some sort of foam to quiet down(I might be mistaken). 1/2 is not much to remove unless it affects the cheekpiece somehow.
