Bought a box of misc. bullets and in it was a box of Hornady 7mm/.284 120gr. spitzers, but what interested me was on the bottom of the label it said (single shot pistol). Now I'm only going to use these for informal plinking out of a 7x57 so loading them down will be no problem. I did not know such a bullet was even made. Evidently for a Thompson/ Center Contender. If I keep the fps below 2200 do you think I could get by ok shooting them? BCM

At one time both Hornady and Sierra made single shot pistol bullets in a couple of sizes. Both produced .308" versions, my father used them in his 30 Herrett handgun. They were constructed to perform well on game at the speeds achieved by hunting handguns. I don't know if there's a limit to their ability to hold together in flight at full power rifle speed.

2200 fps should be no sweat.

Yes, you can get by shooting them at 2200--or even faster. How well they'd work for hunting depends on the size of the animal and the range. They probably wouldn't too well on close-up deer....

They would be just the ticket for a close range, reduced power hunting load for a youth hunter.

Thanks guys, just double checking before I load them. Hey Mathman you gave me an idea. My buddy has a grandkid about ten that he wants to get him into hunting and he's looking for a 7-08. I may just give them to him if he does end up with a rifle in that chambering. Thanks again. BCM

Those bullets in a 7-08 on top of something like IMR4198 would be a great starter combination.

I still have a couple of boxes of those. I used them in my 7mm BR XP-100 (that I no longer own) and killed a couple of whitetail with them.
