I wear a orange hat in Alabama. In Ohio I wear either an orange blaze vest or a blaze orange waterproof breathable shell coat if its raining or warm enough. When I wear the orange coat I wear a orange shirt so when I strip down to field dress or drag a deer I still have orange on my upper. I dont care for a vest as they are just another layer and pretty bulky to go over my heavy cold weather gear but they are sometimes the best option for versatility when I travel. So I always have a vest along when I go to states that require blaze orange. Its not the norm but I have hunted in ohio a few days when I had on a t shirt and a vest.

Layers are better, like the orange hat and light vest

I wear Blaze horizon hat and vest. I think deer see blaze or recognize it as being unnatural. If it wasn't a law I would wear a reversible hat to my stand and go camo when I got there.

Vest. I hunt private timber mostly. I’ve had the same 2 vests for over 15 years.

i've been using Atsko U-V-Killer laundry fluid for years. it kills ultraviolent (blue-white glow) light that the deer see. i use it in all of my hunting clothes, including a orange hat and camo blaze orange hunting vest and i have yet to be seen.

I bought the biggest orange vest that Sitka makes so it will fit over everything else I'm wearing no matter what that is. It's always my outermost layer. If I wear a hat at all, it's orange.

lightweight vest with pockets, a bit over-sized so it fits over bulky outer clothes. it is my understanding that deer see orange as brownish/grayish ...

Deer hunter here. I never wear a blaze coat and rarely a vest. Deer “see” fluorescent orange. I don’t know what exactly it is they see, but they see it. At least the deer I’ve hunted. I wear a cap anytime I’m on the ground moving but very rarely on stand. That includes ladders and ground blinds. I place the hat or a vest in close proximity to my head when stationary. Again with regard to the deer I hunt, they still “see” it but my small bits of movement don’t combine with the visual recognition to trigger their flight reflex when I’m still.

In my experiences with deer as close as 3 yards if deer do "see" blaze orange it does not alert or frighten them. I wear a blaze camo pattern vest. Been wearing it for 25 years.

Orange doesn't help a bit with idiots who take sound or brush shots.

Idaho is 'protect the children'. Orange is required for hunters under 18. 18 and above it's recommended by not required.

Many states have areas where there are hunters and also hikers and bikers. Why aren't the hikers required to wear orange? They're in as much danger as the hunters.

I've heard the stories about sound shooters. I won't call them hunters as it implies they are sportsmen. But does anyone have first hand experience these would be murders?

Layering with an orange coat sounds like a practical choice, especially if you already have your stuff in the pockets. And, it gives you the flexibility to adjust for changing weather conditions.
For me, I've found that having an orange coat is a great option, especially when I'm out in the woods or near roads where visibility is key. It's not just about safety; it's also about being prepared for whatever the weather throws at you.
I recently came across some cool options for safety shirts on this site: https://www.fullsource.com/safety-shirts/. They have a variety of styles and colors, so you might find something that suits your needs.
