I’m about ready to order some cast lead bullets in 357, 44 & 45. Where do you recommend buying 1500 of each. These will be used for plinking.

Would also be interested in buying some hard cast lead BHN > 15. Any good recommendations appreciated.

I've been using a lot of Lightning hard cast for plinking via Graf the past couple years. They're fairly consistent, and while I wouldn't consider them cheap, they're still pretty reasonable when you buy in quantity. Whatever lube they use on them does produce quite a bit of smoke though, which can be either a pro or con, depending on your point of view.

I used to shoot Hunter's Supply, but thier quality control really took a dump a couple years back, wouldn't touch them with a 10 foot pole now. The last few boxes I got had drastic diameter and weight variations. If I'm gonna pay for bullets, I don't want to be sorting them just to be able to hit plinking gongs.

For plinking, Brazos bullets or Missouri bullets hitek coated. Matt’s Bullets makes very high quality traditional lubed bullets and they have a great selection. I recently got some bullets from GT Bullets, they are pretty good but I think they have a backlog of orders. I have also ordered from Oregon Trail, Daradas, Cheycast, and Rimrock, all satisfactory.

I don’t do any casting so I am always on the lookout for cast bullet sources.

Brazos Bullets are very good quality and usually the best price. Bayou Bullets are also very good quality and priced well. Bayou is having a sale right now with free shipping with $150 min. total order. I have not run the numbers, but with free shipping, Bayou may be the best deal right now. Missouri Bullet Company and ACME Bullets are also very good quality, but usually a little more expensive.

Another two cents for Missouri Bullet Company. They make bullets at both 12 and 18 BHN to suit your needs and quality is as good or better than any other commercial cast bullets I've tried.

Prices seem reasonable to me and especially so if you buy a bunch - they use a medium flat rate box so will ship up to 65 pounds worth for $16.00. Their Hi-Tek coating is good for indoor ranges since they don't create extra smoke but the standard lubed ones are cheaper and the smoke from the lube doesn't really matter outdoors.

Before you go off the deep end and buy thousands, why not buy as small a quantity as they'll sell you and at least try them first? Bullet diameter matters a helluva lot, and pistol bullets don't need to be crazy hard. If you haven't measured your throat diameters, and considered the velocity you'll be shooting them at, you're simply rolling the dice. This stuff ain't rocket science, but there are protocols to adhere to if accuracy without leading is desired.

BHN 12? That's a lot harder than 90% of what I shoot, and a bit harder than than the other 10%. Check out how hard the bullets are in factory ammo.....

Amen! Shoot a hard cast .451diameter acp bullet down a Smith with .454-456 throats and get your Lewis Lead Remover ready.

For pistol plinking, swaged lead bullets from Hornady or Speer work great at moderate velocities and are accurate.
