Is there an acceptable range of rim diameters that will work with different bolt face diameters? I see a lot of bolt diameters of .480 and they seem to work well with the standard .473 so there is at least .007 of range. Just wondering if there is a rule of thumb for that.

It's more about the extractor than the bolt face. As long as the extractor can grab the rim, you're good.

Look at Mausers for instance. They don't have a recessed bolt face.
