Rifle Used: Savage 10 Single Shot, 20 inch barrel, heavy varmint profile.

Primer Used: Remington 7 1/2

Powder: Alliant Steel, 11 to 15 grains.

Bullet: 70 grain Speer TNT.

1. 11 grains: 2233 fps

2. 12 grains: 2343 fps

3. 13 grains: 2477 fps

4. 14 grains: 2576 fps

5. 15 grains: 2579 fps ( hmmmm?) not much gain over the 14 grain load

Have you used Steel in .223?

Yup probably 3 to 4000 rounds of it, last couple of varmint seasons.

it is slower than Blue Dot, but I run it with Blue Dot charge weights. It is bulkier than Blue Dot is.

Just an alternative to Blue Dot...thought I'd chronograph some of the loads using the 70 TNT Speer for anyone interested.

Been looking at alternatives for Blue Dot since I've not seen any on the shelves for the last 2 years, but in the last few months, have purchased three 4 pound containers of it, to add to the 8 single pound containers I had. So I'm good for a while...just looking at having flexible solutions for times when powders availability is sketchy.

Therein is wisdom too many fail to grasp.

Some things are so simple most people miss it, or don't think ahead.

Remember my grandpa when I was a kid, who would tell us boys the hardest thing is see is the end of your nose, and then he put his finger on his, and say " yet its right there in front of your face".

He passed on a lot of simple country logic, and he was never wrong about it.
