Turned the air on in my 2002 Tahoe and no cool air period and the fan isn't working at levels 1&2, comes on at 3 but not as strong as it should be. It was working fine the day before this happened I don't know anything about vehicle A/C or how to trouble shoot it it. I realize that after 21 years of being used a lot it's reasonable to expect that it's going to wear out in some way eventually.

My first thought was maybe it needs freon but how would that cause the fan not to work right? I'll be taking it in for repair next week and expect to pay to get it working as it should, Is it likely that the existing unit is totally shot or can it be repaired. I don't mind paying what it takes but don't want to pay any more than it takes.

Any info on what it might cost to repair or replace appreciated.

It could be the blend door(s) actuator(s). Plastic gears strip and it is almost a 100% occurrence(just watch some detractors will say it does not happen). I had it happen on my 2004 Silverado and it was not cheap to fix , the parts are cheap , the labor is the kicker. They have to do major surgery on the dash.

I don't remember exactly what I paid since it was almost 10 years ago but it was close to 800.

We had that problem with my wife's Dodge Dakota 15 years ago. It was a mouse nest inside the ductwork. It blocked all the air ducts. It cost us $700 to get it fixed as everything under the dash had to come out. It was all for labor as no parts were needed.
