Arken has a nice sale going (also cameraland) and these are interesting to me.
Looking at the 6-24 or 5-25 FFP and Christmas tree reticle.
Thoughts if the price upgrade to the EP5 is worth it?
Targets and prairie dogs in the future
Thanks

My understanding is that the main difference is the ED glass in the EP5.
Have any of you had experience with both? What was your experience?

Is the newer EPL4 glass the same as the EP5?

There are several reviews on the differences in these scopes and all of them say pretty much the same thing- The SH4 is good glass for the money but the EP5 is superior in many ways.

Depends. I have both, both are very good, both MOA. The 5-25 has beautiful ED glass and is very bright with that 56mm objective. It's just a pleasure to look through. The SH 6-24 doesn't have ED glass but is still quite good, especially for the price. Downside is weight...the 5-25 is 39oz and the SH 6-24 only a few oz lighter. Also they both have 34mm tubes. Arkens package deal is a can't miss bargain because their 34 rings are very nice, and you'll almost for sure want the throw lever. Arken is having a real good sale right now.

The newer EPL series 6-24x50 is a lot lighter, about 16oz. less, and has ED glass. Beautiful optics, I have 4 of them......30mm tubes and I use Burris Signature Zee riings. But a couple of them have such a stiff zoom ring they do need the throw lever. Not a biggie.

The Arken rings are beautiful and they're for a Picatinny rail, won't work on a Weaver style unless you enlarge the slots. Not difficult with Dremel or file. I use the Picatinny made by Hank's Precision Guns, which is absolutely great. The cross bolt on Burris rings are smaller than a Picatinny slot. But not a problem, just slide the ring forward a little 'til the cross bolt hits and cinch it down.

Own three SH4s. Friend has the 34mm EP5. IMO, difference is not enough to warrant about 65% more money (34mm to 34mm).

See the appeal of the 30mm versions, but want all the adjustment range I can get for .22rf.

Thanks for the replies.
Just ordered the SH4 6-24x50 FFP from cameraland.

My current "best" scope is a vortex venom (which kills my older BSA) and I figure my eyes and experience won't see too terribly much difference between the two Arkens. So, going with the cheaper of the 2.

I own/shoot them all. "Glass" makes literally zero fhuqks and "guts" are what matter MOST. Hint.

The EP5 gives up close range parallax and erector travel,to the SH4 4-16x. I don't care for the 6-24x. Though the EP5 is (10) Mil's per revolution, which is more intuitive than (8). Hint.

The 4-16x SH4 STEALS The Show. Hint.

[Linked Image from imagizer.imageshack.com]

The EPL4 is rather trite on erector travel,as 30mm tubes go(less than half of a SWFA 6/10X). Hint.

As magnification goes up,"friendliness" diminishes and glass quickly becomes fhuqking fickle. All of the Arken reticles are killer and all track, repeat and hold zero. Hint...............

Nobody that actually shoots thinks the glass quality doesn't matter.

The Arken you're shilling sucks. You can buy better that tracks and doesn't look like hammered dogchitt at high power.

The 5 is marginally better.

But you do you.

Um, we already know you love cheap chi-com glass, but thanks for more pictures I guess.

I can't post pics of either, because they sucked enough I gave them away. At least your Athlon Helos 2-12 reccomendation is usable.

I've got a 4-16 EP5. Tracks and holds zero perfectly. My only complaint would be that the eyebox is not very forgiving if your rest is not optimal. Other than that, it was money well spent.

Just ordered one from today. 5x25-56 ep5 only, not the package deal. Thanks again for the sale Doug.

What is the consensus on their 34mm rings? I didnt order the rings yet because I wanted to check clearance with my barrel to make sure I get the correct height. Are the arken rings good? Or should I look for a different set?

Looks like scope will be here Tuesday according to tracking. I'll measure then hit Doug back up again and order the right height rings.
