Please help. I have two 99's. One is clearly marked as a 99CD Series A in .308, S/N C33219**. Could you tell me the year of manufacture? The other is only marked Model 99, in .300 Savage, S/N 7176**. What version 99 is it and what is the year of manufacture? It's missing the rear serrated ramp. Any thoughts on where to get one or should I skip it and drill and tap it for a scope...?
The 99CD has a broken stock. I've contacted Gunstocks, Inc. and, while they don't carry the monte carlo with cheek piece, they say they can make one if I send the broken one. Anyone had any experience with them?

I'm not very good on the A series but give us a description of the 300 savage and some one here will get you what you want.
Stock, forearm, checkering, etc. Also the lever boss code will help (stamped above the lever hinge in a circle).

Best I can tell the lever boss code says "AF". The gun has a traditional point pattern checkering with a border on the schnabel forearm. There is also checkering on the pistol grip and the butt plate is steel. It has a 24" barrel with a semi-buckhorn rear sight. It has "SAVAGE MODEL 99" on the top of the receiver and "300 SAVAGE" on the left side of the barrel near the receiver. It's been drilled and tapped for a tang sight but not for a scope so I'm assuming it's factory drilling. The safety is on the lever.

1954, model EG.
It sounds like it hasn't been tampered with at all considering that it hasn't been tapped for a scope.
They weren't drilled for a scope till 1957, the rear sight is also correct.

99CD Series A in .308, S/N C33219** Was made in Dec of 1976
"C" stands for Clip "D" stands for Delux
I may be wrong, but I believe the "A" series for the that year had a rear sight boss and Snable type forend.. Rick may be able to help with that information.

You should be able to locate a replacement elevator at a good gunsmith shop or a local gun show. I don't recommend drill and tap unless the rifle is just a shooter and you have to have a scope.

Thanks, guys! I appreciate it.
Reading this thread has me all worked up for "accumulating" 99's. I seem to go nuts for awhile on a certain model of gun. I don't know why I never thought of 99's before. Ten to fifteen years ago I used to see them all the time in the gun stores but never gave them a second look 'cause I had a beauty already. I don't see as many anymore but I ask at every store. You never know what's laying around. I recently realized that I love lever action rifles and why not the 99. Enough 94's, 92's, 336's, 66's, 73's, and Henry's. I'm not stopping at two 99's, that's for sure... What other great calibers besides the 308 and 300 should I be looking for and why?
I can't think of a better deer rifle for the Pacific NW, can you?

You need a copy of Murray's book The Ninety-Nine:
Doug Murray 20 Polo Lane Westbury, NY 11590
The cost is $30.00 post paid, Canada add $3.00.
He also did one on the 336 and the 88.
