…unless I was armed.

Hog tracks, like feral hogs, are common as dirt in Texas, ain’t very many as big as this one tho.

As seen today on State Land in the Hill Country today, no domestic livestock. Not a very productive area from a hog’s perspective except maybe deer feeders, no crop lands nearby. This was on a hilltop, maybe an inch of soil over bedrock, likely feeding on juniper berries (AKA cedar around here).

Car keys added for scale, nobody carries quarters anymore.

Any llamas in the area?
It's hard to tell. Does that track show a dewclaw? Llamas don't have those.

Probably a 300 pounder. Have seen a few in the hill country that were over 400 most likely. One that Carolyn shot with her bow bottomed our 320 pound scale. Big ones are few and far between though

A few years ago, I had a hog break a new 1/8" 7x7 stainless snare. Snare was not twisted or kinked, it was pull straight into. You could see where the hog dug in and other than the one set of dug in footprints, there was no sign of struggle at all. 1700# tensile strength.

I think there must have been a bad spot in the cable, but it didn't look like it.

State land? In the Hill Country?
Llamas? Yes.
Fallow deer? Yes.
Blackbuck antelope? Yes.
Elk? Yes.
Oryx? Yes.

Texas Hill Country is covered with exotic wildlife "ranches" with all sorts of exotic critters!
Yep! They're behind "high" fence, but, like "Jurrasic Park", nature finds a way!
The Hill Country also has tons of feral, nonnative species running hither and yon on the limestone and cedar habitat...not to mention all the whitetail farms.
The Hill Country is home to the highly touted "YO" exotic game ranch (Mountain Home, TX)!

Driving by a high fence ranch in south Texas, we observed a pretty good herd of camels! 😳
My youngest has a property in south Texas. There is a free range nilgai cow that roams the adjacent high fence property!

As stated there’s all sorts of creatures crossing fences in the Hill Country, at least based on that track we can eliminate zebras and emus 🙂

But this one was in with a bunch of regular-size hog tracks.

This is the area where tracks were at, not real productive, especially after our dry summer.

Hardly any public land in Texas; 137,000 people visited that park in ‘22, more this year. They prob’ly already know but I’ll let ‘em know there’s a big pig walking their most popular trail.

BIL says Nilgai are pretty tasty. He used to hunt the barrier islands east of the King Ranch from a boat.

have had that happen by one of two high boars that used to run together on our old place before my parents sold it.

Looks like someone carved up a hillside to put a driveway in and cleared a hilltop to build on on 336 east of Vanderpool, I guess so we’ll all get to look at their house. I hate it when people do that.

Ain’t been over the hill on 336 to Leakey in years, back in the days I rode it so often on motorcycles I could probably do it with my eyes closed. Back then we didn’t have to worry about giraffes or monkeys in the road tho.

What happened was EMS got tired of responding to all the bike wrecks and the DPS started impounding bikes for like 50 over the speed limit.

Then the Harleys arrived and nobody rode very fast anymore.

There are two kinda azzholes on the Sisters, the one that refuses to let the fast & furious pass, and the fast & furious. It puts the innocent oncoming folks in danger.

The bonus azzhole is the one pulling a trailer so long he cannot make a turn without being in both lanes
