Well, the accumulation continues. Just picked up a 99 (1899 I guess) takedown in .303. Need your help again with model designation and year. Serial # is 1168**. It has the schnabel forearm and a pistol grip stock. Both forearm and pistol grip are checkered with the forearm almost in a connecting triple diamond pattern. The lever boss code is an "H" inside of a triangle.

The rear sight has been removed and a Redfield tang peep sight was mounted. The steel is pretty rough - to the point where I might as well have it reblued since there is not patina, only rust. The bore is pretty nice. Paid $85 and think with a little luvin' I got myself a keeper.

Your rifle was made in 1911. I need more info to determine the model. Is the wood serial numbered to the rifle? What is the barrel length? What type of butt plate?

The checkering does not sound factory. Make sure the barrel lines up correctly when snugged down. Don't forget to open the lever before you try to remove the barrel.

The forearm is serial numbered although it is 205214. The barrel is 20" and locks in nice and tight. The butt plate is steel and slightly curved, but not crescent.

If the barrel is a light weight version it might be an 1899-H. The H was the only one that came with a 20" barrel at that time. Sounds like the wood has been replaced. Not sure about the pistol grip as that was not a standard item.

Also, it wouldn't have a lever boss on it at that early of a model.

Mad Dog,

I think the lever boss code he is refering to is the inspectors mark that appeared in that location around 100,000.
