405 Winchester, everyone SHOULD own at least one!

Seriously!

You can't hide behind, "ammo not available" or "brass is obsolete" anymore.

They flip deer like cheeseburgers!

Recoil isn't as bad as touted, you do know when you pulled the trigger but manageable.

Want holy-shhhit, try a Ruger's boat-paddle rifle in 270 Win, that's more brutal

I really like my 405 Winchester 1885 and I wish more hunters used this round. I have high hopes of taking a deer during Mississippi's primitive season with it this year. Arkansas just implemented a straight-wall season so I'm curious to see what the finalized regulations will look like as far as allowed cartridge lengths.

But having said that, I think limited rifle & ammo selection is still a problem. If I'm not mistaken, Hornady only does sporadic runs of their 300gr Interlock SP (maybe that will improve in the future). If you go look on a search engine like AmmoSeek, there's no affordable ammo for a new convert to buy right now. And the Winchester 1895 is the only production gun that I'm aware of. Otherwise you have to locate an older Winchester 1885 or Ruger No. 1 if you want one. The 405 Winchester is not as affordable to embrace as other rounds like the more popular 45-70 Gov't. I agree with the OP on the recoil comment: I'm shooting a rifle with a metal buttplate & it's more like a firm push than a snappy punch.

I have 195 rounds at the moment (300gr Interlock SP, 300gr FN & 400gr Woodleigh Weldcore) so I'm set for years of hunting. The best I can do is try to bag some deer, post some pictures & hope to generate some additional interest in the cartridge. I would very much like for it to succeed and stay relevant in a world where great cartridges fade into obscurity all the time. I'm a fan of rimmed cartridges in falling blocks ( I hunt with a 303 British, 9.3x74r, 405 Win & 44 Mag) so I'm really glad I own one.

Just bought my second. Already have an original 95 in 405, and just snapped up a Ruger#1 405 for Illinois deer hunting. Single Shot and straight wall cartridge. Perfect. As Ruark said, Use Enough Gun!
Now to find a set of scope rings!

I've got a peep sighted 1895 and a scoped Encore. Sadly, both are unblooded as of yet.

Bloodied my Encore 405 win on a friends ranch a couple years ago. Hopefully the 1895 will join the club this year. Got my hunt invitation memorial day.

Had one years ago, a drilling with 20 ga barrels on top. Shot poorly and went down the road.
