Just inherited a Marlin 39-A, it has a straight stock, a 20" round barrel, barrel says Micro-groove, the bullseye is intact, has sling swivels, left upper side of barrel next to receiver has either been factory or later drill and tapped for scope, top of receiver is also drill and tapped for scope, all holes have filler screws, rear sight has been replaced with a blank, serial number is L21XXX...mainly looking for DOM, plus some discussion of rifle being drilled and tapped for scope in both places........

I cannot help you with the DOM, but the 39-A I gave my niece for her birthday was only factory tapped for scope on top of the receiver.

The "L" prefix would indicate a 1954 DOM.

Marlin Owners forum and maybe Rimfire Central would be good places to discuss the drillings.

My 1969 DOM 39A came factory drilled on top of the receiver for a short thin claw type scope base provided by Marlin at the time, I presume, but I've replaced it with a weaver rail and steel strap rings.

I do believe the drillings in your barrel are factory. They did some whacky stuff back in the day.

Thanks all for the replies, now all I need is a rear sight. I have several rear sights, but don't know which is period correct, if, I have 1 of those.

the barrel tapped was in 46/47 for a Sears & Robuck deal, after that Marlin would do it on request for any body for a few years . either a 2.5 or a 4 x weaver 3/4" scope is what was used
