Which cartridges have you used to take at least one big game animal?
For me this is the list:
.22-250 Remington .243 Winchester .25-06 Remington .270 Winchester 7mm Remington Magnum .300 Savage .308 Winchester .30-06 Springfield .300 Winchester Magnum 8mm Remington Magnum .338 Lapua Magnum
It's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

Deer to Grizzly bears. If we can count Pigs I can add another five or 10 handgun and rifle cartridges plus shotguns.

For me, only:
12 ga slugs .308 Winchester .300 Winchester Magnum .340 Weatherby .375 Weatherby
I generally don't try out new cartridges when I have rife/cartridge combinations that have worked well.

Not trying to rain on anyone's parade, but I will not furnish an easy list for the Government. You all know that they monitor sites like this , so why make it easy. If, and when they show up at your door, and collect all of your guns that they find, then they bring out their list. Want to know why we did not find a 30-06, .243, or others. I have been grilled by Army intelligence, over a period of days, an it was not a fun thing. In fact if a second Lt. had wanted to lie to save himself, I would have went to prison. miles

The fact is; the government isn’t capable of a mass disarmament and although people have guns and ammunition, you are not a blip on the radar screen of what the government is looking for at this time. They simply could not start any form of door to door snooping and gun confiscation when there are so many gun owners and a Constitution to protect your individual rights. You may think it is worse than this, but check where this has been done around the world and you will see, America isn’t what it was 50 years ago, but it isn’t that bad yet…

Hunting over 5 decades, hunting multiple states, party hunting where legal, hunting several different species of big game, and having hunted when generous bag limits were available I've been very blessed to have had the opportunities I've had. Many cartridges have been used to take only one animal before later selling or retiring the firearm just to say I had done so. Off the top of my head -

Good thread Thank you! I thought it would be a good idea. Per the comments earlier about Big Brother watching the lists we post, to make a list of the various guns one has used to take big game is hardly conclusive. Some of the guns we don't keep or never owned in the first place. Some were loaners from the guiding service while others were borrowed from family or friends. No need to worry. I think Shrapnel put it best, "The fact is; the government isn’t capable of a mass disarmament and although people have guns and ammunition, you are not a blip on the radar screen of what the government is looking for at this time. They simply could not start any form of door to door snooping and gun confiscation when there are so many gun owners and a Constitution to protect your individual rights." Have fun and lets keep 'em coming!
It's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

I'm just glad to see I'm not the only one with rimfires on their list 😆 For me, they were rifles available to hand, when opportunity arose. Most of them were pigs.

In fact if a second Lt. had wanted to lie to save himself, I would have went to prison. miles If theres a list we are already on it.

I always find threads like this interesting just to see what other hunters favor. I have an eclectic collection that I enjoy hunting with that I'm sure wouldn't be liked by everyone else. Vive la différence. Looking at the first five pages, the most popular chambering shouldn't be a surprise based on the average age of members of this forum. There's a lot of classics in the Top 10 List: Count : Cartidge ====================== 51 : 30-06 Springfield 39 : 243 Winchester 38 : 308 Winchester 34 : 270 Winchester 31 : 25-06 Remington 29 : 7mm Rem Mag 27 : 30-30 Winchester 21 : 223, 300 Win Mag, 35 Whelen & 45-70 Gov't 19 : 257 Roberts 17 : 6.5x55 Swede, 375 H&H Honorable mention to the 22-250, 280, 44 Mag, 7mm-08, 300 Savage, 338 WM, 35 Remington & 7x57 Mauser. 222 Rem 416 Rem And some betwixt. 55gr to the left. 404gr to the right. odonata,
Good job taking the time to tally up the cartridge list. The top 4 shouldn't be a surprise to us. It's the other cartridges that make the list interesting.

It's the other cartridges that make the list interesting. Obviously this isn't a scientific or comprehensive analysis but it was kind of interesting to see what does & does not get listed. Like there was only one 350 Legend. With all of the straight-wall regulations (Arkansas just implemented one for the upcoming season), I thought there might be a few more of those. From the posts in the single shot forum, I know people are hunting with them. But the 45-70's still seem to dominate that category. It was nice to see my classic 6.5x55 outrank the newer 6.5mm options (I took two deer with my Ruger No. 1 Swede this last season). As expected a few of my calibers (300 HAM'R, 9.3x74r, 405 Win) only had one or two additional mentions. Only three of mine (6.5x55, 30-06, 375 H&H) made the Top 10. Like I alluded to in my tally above, I think there's a lot of classics listed simply because so many of the posters have been hunting for 50+ years. It's kind of sad that the 25-06, 257 Roberts & 35 Whelen make the Top 10 list but it's harder to find these chamberings today. It's even tougher to locate one when you shoot left like I do.

This list assumes that hogs count. If not we can eliminate the .223/5.56, 6.5 Grendel and the 7.62 Russian

I just realized of all the guns I have owned, friends guns, and random odd ball calibers I have shot at the range that belonged to other people, I have never pulled the trigger on a 30-30 50 years ago my cousins mowed grass all summer & bought themselves a pair of Marlin 336’s. As a young teenager, I got to pull the trigger on one of them. So I’m exactly one bullet ahead of you.

In chronological order beginning 1978: 220 Swift 308 Winchester 300 Weatherby 280 JDJ 280 Remington 7 Weatherby (favorite) 300 WSM (favorite) 308 Winchester
Bought my Remington 700 308 in 1978, have used it intermittently since. Went back to it exclusively in 2005. Have taken many animals with it.it got a major upgrade in 2008. It got a 20 oz custom composite stock, teflon coated barreled action and a Swarovski replaced the Leupold.

I used to have a lot of fine guns. Then a tragic boating accident sent them all to the bottom of the lake.

Countless rabbits wirh 22 LR 270 30/06 Passed up a small buck while using the 6.5 CM. I'm counting it. Lol
All of them do something better than the 30-06, but none of them do everything as well.

My list is pretty small compared to many: 32 Win Special (1st deer, 1st elk) 270 300 WSM 30-06 22-250
Except for the '06, all of those were just 1 gun in that caliber. I've always considered a gun to be just a tool. If it works and works well, I use it and don't buy any more.

Which cartridges have you used to take at least one big game animal?
For me this is the list:
.22-250 Remington .243 Winchester .25-06 Remington .270 Winchester 7mm Remington Magnum .300 Savage .308 Winchester .30-06 Springfield .300 Winchester Magnum 8mm Remington Magnum .338 Lapua Magnum Ok, I'll bite: 6mm ARC 6x47L 6mm Remington .250 Savage .257 Roberts .25-06 Remington (two different rifles) .260 Remington (four different rifles) .270 Winchester .280 Remington 7mm Remington Magnum .30-30 Winchester .308 Winchester .30-06 (four different rifles) 8mm Mauser Most all of those were used on whitetail deer, and an occasional antelope, nothing big and bulky.....

In fact if a second Lt. had wanted to lie to save himself, I would have went to prison. miles Fun list, but I don’t want to publicly state everything I own or give any idea how many I own. Then don't comment
Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition and we'll stay free.

In fact if a second Lt. had wanted to lie to save himself, I would have went to prison. miles Fun list, but I don’t want to publicly state everything I own or give any idea how many I own. Then don't comment They know the last time you took a cshit, much less how many guns you own!

Compared to most of not all, I'll be at the bottom of the list when comes to quantity of cartridges used on game.. .......30-06, 300WSM and 300 Win.....My 28 Nosler and 338/378 Bee have yet to see field action. Sold the '06 decades ago....

Which cartridges have you used to take at least one big game animal?
For me this is the list:
.22-250 Remington .243 Winchester .25-06 Remington .270 Winchester 7mm Remington Magnum .300 Savage .308 Winchester .30-06 Springfield .300 Winchester Magnum 8mm Remington Magnum .338 Lapua Magnum I have to add the .300 WSM! I used my Father’s M70 in .300 WSM with the 150 grain Corelokt Tipped ammo to take a cow elk last month. It worked very well!
It's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

Buckshot on both quite a few times. 12 ga slugs also. And though not asked for, compound, recurve, both homemade and custom. Never a longbow. But have used a crossbow. Anything from pigs and deer up to moose and bears. The very least impressive of all of these. Ran a long way. zero blood until last 50 yards, was a lung shot whitetail doe with the 50 bmg. Caliber in. Caliber out. There isn't a single one that had bad results. I"m sure the 50 deer ran so far simply adrenalin due to the noise of the 50 going off. They are horribly loud. There isn't a single one I wouldn't use again. Assuming I am sizing the round for the game. IE no moose with a 380. But a bear with a 9mm wasn't an issue and I would do that again without issue if I had to.

Think I have killed at least one deer with everything I've ever had. Well except my new 260. So see if I can remember what all I've had.

I'm surprised so many of you have taken big game with rimfires. Where I live, big game means whitetails or black bear. I used a 30-06 only (except for bow) for a couple decades. Here's my list:
12 gauge buckshot 6.5 Creedmoor 308 Winchester 30-06 338 Federal
That's it. I have a 25-06 that I may try one of these days. I have seen plenty killed in my group with shotgun slugs, 30-30s and 270.
