Had a pretty good day fishing today. 4 black cod and a quillback rockfish. Those black cod were jigged up from between 1600 and 1700ft down, haha. Took almost 15 minutes to hit the bottom and at least 10 minutes to reel it back up. Going back out again tomorrow.

Nope, Avet HXW filled up with 80lb powerpro. It actually isn't as bad as I thought it would be to reel back up. Been able to stay on bottom with a 14oz kodiak custom though. Tried to fish there again today but the drift was ripping so we bailed on that idea.

No bug eye swim bladder inflation from that depth? Do they come up dead?

Nope they can handle the pressure change just fine. If you release them they just swim back down. Rockfish on the other hand can't regulate themselves coming up from that depth so they get smoked pretty good. Good thing for us here is you almost always catch the slope rockfish species at that depth and we are allowed to keep one. I caught some redbanded rockfish in the 1300' range but once I moved out to 1700' I was getting all black cod.

Damn! I thought we were reaching when we do 700ft for halibut off the Oregon coast. Mostly it's a case of I think I have one on.

Yep, fishing that deep is tough! 48-64 oz lead barely keeps it on the bottom. You know it right quick though when you’ve hooked a 100+ lb Hali!
When we started catching alot of black cod, we would move……they will clean you out of bait fast.

Got back after it and got another 4 this morning. Forgot to take a group photo but I did get one of the jig I use. Kodiak Custom, works awesome! Also got 2 dogfish about 600ft down while dropping. That sucked. Got a skate down over 1700ft and had to haul that up. That sucked even more.

Is there any possibility of a caloric gain when one is fishing that deep?

What would happen if you hung that heavy jig off the bottom of a string of cheapo shrimp flies? Maybe tipped with herring chunks? Four blackcod at a time sounds better than one when cranked from 1500'.

Tried going out to the edge of the shelf off WCVI once and dropping in 700-800ft...got one decent halibut and some boccacio.

The closest I've done to that is Tilefish in over a thousand feet of water, and they are excellent eating.

Can't use more than 2 hooks at a time here. I could also just set my longline and run up to 300 hooks on it, but what fun is that.
