Government jobs have many slackers. I worked at one for 33 years. Most do about 4 hours of work in an eight hour day

Hired a guy for a summer job a while ago. It’s very rare for people not to come back for several summers, but this guy was a once and done. Heard from a neighbor that he didn’t care for the work pace. “There wasn’t much standing around time” was the phrase he used. I took it as a compliment.

When I did water/sewer, we'd often get called off a big production job to go fix whatever for municipalities. It'd be 2 of us fixing a leak while 4 or so of the town employees stood around watching. Some of the stuff was very simple, and I always wondered why/how they even had these people on staff to fix issues, when they couldn't even begin to.

One of my employees would punch in and take a 30 minute crap every morning. Was glad when he left. "Boss makes a dollar, I make a dime. That's why I poop on company time."

Had two DBA's over the past 20 years who would create work for themselves. Both contractors. Both walked off the job in a huff when we got close to figuring out what was going on. A month after the second one walked, CIO came over and said "Hey XYZ system has not had an issue in several weeks. What did we do to fix the problem?"

New guy started around mid-April. Guy will not STFU!!! He's gotta tell me every freakin task he does. I told him multiple times IDGAF!! Still continues.
Worse thing is, he'll ask you a question, but talk over you as you give an answer. I figured out quick he's got all the answers but not interested in a normal conversation. He just wants to hear himself talk.
I get along with everyone. This guy is testing my patience. Sounds like we work at the same place.

I knew a guy who felt sorry for his dead beat BIL and got him a job at his mechanic shop. His BIL knew nothing about working on cars, first day on the job he took a leaf blower and started "clearing" the dirt parking lot. It was a hot, dry day and he blew dirt all over employees and customers cars. All the employees came outside and stood there looking at him like he was crazy. He quietly fired his BIL twenty minutes later

On my old job at the water dept., me and every new hire got to spend his first day reading water meters or shoveling sludge at the wastewater plant. About half of them never returned after we broke for lunch. I worked with 21 new guys in a 10 year period and most quit after the first week. The supervisor was a second cousin of mine and was a complete azzhole and tyrant to everyone below him. It was a good day when I was able to tell him to take this job and shove it.

Knew a dispatcher who kept a half pint in his desk drawer. Fired the man on the spot when he got caught. Within three days, traffic was so fudged up it wasn't funny. Called him back to work. Boss took him to a back room. "Keep your bottle back here! NOT in your desk drawer!" Within a few days, traffic cleared up and smoothed out. He retired with his own, designated, bottle hiding place! When you're good, you're good!

When Field Ops (water department) was working a major main break, there were always 4 or 5 men, standing around the hole, leaning on a shovel! Public raised old Billy hell! On a major, fix it quickly main break, the city didn't bother with shoring up the hole! The guys standing around, leaning on a shovel was the rescue crew in case the hole caved in. OSHA didn't like it, but when you're dealing with spewing millions of gallons of potable drinking water into the street and storm sewers, speed and brevity is the name of the game.

When I worked for a large beverage company back in the 90s, we had an employee who was awesome, never called in, did what he was supposed to do, and everyone liked working with him. We all thought he was going to move his way up in the ranks, but his supervisor wanted to keep him where he was at because he was making money for him. It didnt take long for the other beverage companies to notice him and their higher ups would suddenly show up on his route and make small talk with him. One company made him a good position and pay raise and he gave his notice and left. When his supervisor got wind of where he landed after leaving our company he was furious and confronted our ex employees new boss in a large grocery store. It turned into a large shouting match and both of them were told to leave the store.
