I had total replacement one year ago with the Mako Robotic Arm Assistance. You have a special MRI and the parts are built from the MRI.The computer assist the doctor in fitting the parts in your knee.I used a walker for four days and after that I walked on my own.I put a basket on the front of my walker so I could carry stuff because you can't carry nothing worth a damn using a walker. That helps a lot.Don't sit around or be a baby and wait for it to heal, stay active and move.As for pain,my leg hurt more from the torniquet they put on my thigh more than the actual surgical area.I took pain meds for a day and a half as a precaution, but never really needed them so I quit taking them.My doctor put me on Celecoxib for inflamation. My leg did swell and it's going to while it's healing.Start your PT on your own working on your ROM(range of motion).I started working on my ROM a few hours after surgery while laying in bed.My doctor scheduled eight weeks of PT for me.I think I would have done OK with less, but I did it anyway. There were several people at PT that had knee replacement a month or two before me,I was ahead of them on ROM in about a week.I read a lot and watched videos about the surgery and post op surgery.Try to get in shape before surgery.Loose weight if you need to and go into surgery both mentally and physically prepared and you will probably have a better outcome.I'd like to share this info with you.One link is on ROM.It lets you know what about where you should be after your surgery and what your ROM has be before you're able to do certain activities.Three days post op I had my first day of PT.I was at 105 degrees on my ROM.One week later I was at 113 degrees. In two weeks I was at 125 degrees. When I went to see my doctor two weeks after surgery he was surprised and said Wow! https://www.onestep.co/resources-blog/range-of-motion-after-knee-replacement-surgery
Here is a link for videos of an Orthopedic doctor who gives his day to day progressions on his post op surgery.I watched a lot of videos, but his videos helped me more than others learning what to do and what to expect after surgery.

Had both of mine replaced, 5 and 6 years ago. Left one is 100% improvement. Right one, not so much until recently. Work caused me a lot of pain, but since retirement a year ago, I walk my dog about a mile and a half every day, even in the rain. I have lost some weight and the knee pain is gone.
As others have said, do the PT and don't let up, work through the pain. During my first session, the therapist said "You my first patient who's called out for his mommy.". And I'm not ashamed to admit it. 😁
Here is more.He has more videos but you have to look for them.

I went in for my physical therapy one day, as my therapist greeted me at the door, I said "If you are here, who is guarding the Gates of Hell?" She thought that was funny.

No pain no gain.
LOLOL!!!
My wife will be having her second replacement at the end of summer. Hates doing PT. She asked if she can borrow that line. 😆
Both my knees are bone on bone.I have read all kind of reports from 10-20 % to almost 40% of replacement still have pain after a year. Unfortunately due to other medical problems, surgery is out for me. I have been taking the Mono Visc or Euflexxa injections about three yeas now. They cure nothing, but do cut the pain down some.

Had a total knee replacement done one year ago this month. I'd say I'm about 90% , still gets stiff if I sit to long, minor pain coming down stairs. I had bone on bone, I'd do it again. My Surgeon was a friend of my son, so I asked him to take pictures of the procedure, glad I was asleep.
I had one done exactly a year ago. I had put it off for 18 months “just because.” Had I known how much better things are I would have done it long before I did.

If you have lots of pain and limp when you walk you really just need to get it done. Over a year for me and it still pisses me off but it's getting better. Customer of mine said just two days ago she would have never guessed the way I move around. Worst part is not being able to climb into the back of the truck on my knees to retrieve my schit! I pushed hard and it hurt alot but I had no choice. 57 when I had it done. Do whatever I want but that leg is still weaker (than the other.)
Side note I work physically and was expecting a faster recovery with my level of activity.

Vet your doctor, I used the same doc my primary physician used. I had an older doc do my hip, recovery time in the hip was long. If you do the excercise as prescribed you will be fine. I am 2 months and 2 days after total knee replacement and am riding a bike 5 miles, walking with no limp. The first days after surgery force yourself to bend it as much as possible and hold for 15 min then straighten as straight as possible and hold while iceing it. It’s a chore, but I did for 3 days. Quick recovery.
Have you ever had to have one? I am at that stage have gone though the shots but arthritis and bone on bone is where I am at. It's been tough getting wood in for next winter. Doctor told me 10 to 20% of knee replacements don't have good outcomes?
Find a new doctor. Have had both done.
Not as good as the OEM but the pain is gone

"Don’t be a hero meaning take the pain pill 1/2 hour before your therapist arrives."
It depends on which pain pill. I get zero pain relief from the crap they prescribe these days. On May 18 I herniated a disc in my back (the 4th time), pulled the groin muscle and a thigh muscle in my left leg and hurt my left knee all at the same time. I couldn't get an appt. with the back/knee doc until June 18 or an appt. with my primary care doc until May 31.
I couldn't sleep in my bed at all, only got a few hours on sleep in my recliner and could barely walk until 5/27 after I got some THC:CBD Gummies. My Son's wife has had 2 MAJOR back surgeries and has built up a tolerance to all the prescribed opioids. She started taking 1/4 of a CBD Gummie a few years ago and it has really helped reduce her back pain. I called my Son the morning of 5/27 to find out where to get gummies and there is a place about 2 miles from me. I told the guy there that I had a herniated disc and wanted the strongest thing he had. I took 1/4 of a gummie 30 min. before I went to bed that night and slept 10 hours with no pain. I took 1/4 of a gummie for 3 more days and all the pain was gone.
When I saw my primary doc on May 31 and he wanted to prescribe opioids. I asked his opinion of the CBD gummies and he said they wouldn't reduce my pain (he was wrong).
When I saw the orthopedic doc on June 18 they were selling CBD gummies!!!
I’m 3.5 weeks from having mine done, complete replacement, new knee cap too. I’m back in the boat already, doing mostly what I like. Stiff but coming along super, better everyday.

Wife and her daughter both work in Orthopedic surgery centers so I get to hear the chatter every night at dinner. Vet your Dr. Don't just take his (or her) word for it that they're the best in town. Like most things in life, if they have to brag, it's because they aren't worth a dam. Ask who is the go to Dr. when things need redone. It happens, and the rookies don't get that kind of work. Do your PT. short term pain for long term gain. Greatly lessens the chances of having to do it again or get less than stellar results.
The Mako system is pretty great. I got to play with it at a conference last winter. I think I could do a replacement surgery with that thing, It won't let you screw up. You can't cut outside the lines so no off kilter bones for a perfect fit of the new joint.

Ehunter: Go until you have trouble (can't!) sleep at night. Then GET IT DONE. Been there done that. I know LOTS of folks who have had it done - all report less pain. YMMV I know I consider my total knee replacement a miracle/blessing. Hold into the wind VarmintGuy
I know many guys that have had knee replacements, including one brother had both replaced and another brother had one replaced. Both followed the rehab and said it was painful but very much worth it. All the others I know, similar comments, except one guy. That one guy did not properly follow his rehab exercises.
