I’ve been looking at Henry single shots for a few weeks and pretty well narrowed it down to either a 357 mag or a 30-30. After much back and forth, I got to thinking what chamberings are the fire members favorites if for no other reason, I’m old and fat and it’s Friday night. I’m drinking a beer on the balcony of a beach condo and it just intrigued me. 🤣

I bought a 357 due to Illinois requiring a straight wall case for deer. Already have Contenders in 30-30 and 223.

Between those two, I'd pick the 30-30. I looked a long time for a 30-30 Handi rifle that I didn't need, but wanted. If you are open to another option, 360 BH. That would make it primitive legal.

Primitive legal and if you decided to travel to deer hunt, it's straight wall and case length legal in states with those restrictions. There are some very good prices out there right now on factory ammo. I just bought some more Remington 200gr. CL at $24.00 a box. If you want to handload, there multiple options for dies and it takes .358 diameter bullets.

Have a cold one for me.

Yessir the 360 has been in contention. I have so much 30-30 ammo now that it makes the most sense. But… the 360 will work for primitive season and a 200gr bullet will have some authority for sure. I keep telling myself no more new calibers but I don’t think it’s working.

I like the 360 the best of the newer straight wall cartridges and greatly prefer a rim on single shots for extraction.

May have to roll the dice on the 360. The 357, honestly, would be more of a fun gun/plinker/truck gun. Not sure how long it would keep my interest.

Still kicking them around. Looked at some TC Encores and frames but they are more expensive than I really want to spend for this project.

Honestly I hope the industry supports the 360. It’s already behind the 350L big headstart.

I posted this in another thread. Met a Fed./Rem./ CCI ammo rep about a month ago. I asked him how well the 360 BH was doing. He said the first year orders exceeded their expectations and they were increasing production this year.

They are already introducing new ammo. An all copper and a flex tip are coming out by the fall. If you look at hunting ammo, the 360 BH is cheaper than 350L.

With more rifles coming to the market, I think it stands a good chance.

Well, as life goes, I did a thing totally opposite of what we are talking about… I won an auction on GunBroker for a Handirifle 223, 1:9 twist. So, probably going to put the brakes on for anything else right now and move forward with my old 45-70 for primitive season. I’m keenly watching how the 360 does moving forward!

Thanks for the info abolt that’s encouraging news!

What the .350 has going for it at present is the wide platform compatibility and tremendous variety of ammo, even subsonic now. About $250 will get you a decent side-charging upper from Bear Creek, and through the mail to boot. Doesn’t get much easier. OTOH the .360 is clearly superior in performance to the .350 and even has the edge on some of the old timers. The .400 is also interesting, but moving slowly as well. No straight wall nonsense here as yet, so I’m sitting this out for now, but I still find that .360 very compelling. Hoping CVA adds it to the Scout series.
