I shoot a 60lb. Hoyt Carbon Matrix.
About 25-30 shots and my accuracy is off by a good bit.
Just curious.

I shoot a 40# daily,. I try and shoot 20 to 30 arrows everyday. I shoot the same bow for 3D. My hunting bow is only 45# but is a couple pound lighter in weight for easier carrying. I don't hunt from fixed stands so carry my bow all day.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.

40# bow is hard to find second hand, especially with a longer draw length.

Due to a shoulder issue last year I hunted with a 42# draw compound, successfully. This year I think I’ll be back to my 53# compound for hunting.

Not answering your question but there ya go. Lol

There's a thread on ArcheryTalk about hunting lower poundage bows for hunting.
I can't count the number of times i've read''shoulder problems'' after shooting 70lbs. for years.
People comment their kids almost always getting pass-throughs with 35-45lb. bows.

I’ve shot from 30 up through 80 pounds - shoulder fatigue is real for me past 65 pounds and I’m probably carrying some of my mid-informed youth in scar tissue in the rotator cuffs.

I elk hunt with 60-62 pounds, had have 3 pass-throughs, and one arrow buried to the fletch on a hard quartering away shot. Doesn’t mean my setup is the best - it just works for my needs.

40 pounds with a COC will penetrate about any deer at a reasonable range in the deer management program here - which is about 20 yards. Further, it get harder with distance, most will up their poundage a bit. I’ve seen some big bucks on the VA / WVA border that I’d want a bit more energy on.

Practicing at a lower draw and using good form does me much better than than burning out after 5-10 shots fighting the draw and holding the bow - YMMV

I think Ted Nugent uses either a 40 or 45# Compound and a two blade from tree stands. The last 45# bow I had was a little custom recurve that was "faster" with a 640gr arrow than my late 70's 65# Compound and 2018/Zwicky 2 blade was!. Amazing Technology! I don't shoot Archery at all now, older shoulders....:(

I've been shooting a bow since 1958. And haven't missed a year since. Pests and varmints, indoor, outdoor NFAA spots, 3D, deer, elk and black bear.

The most important shots you take are the first ones. I've had shoulder and back injuries over time, from having fun most of the time, and I've had to recover from injuries several times over the last 60 years.
I shot my first whitetail at 16 with a 41lb Browning in the 60's, and have taken about 200 whitetails since then. Sometimes with reduced power compound bows in the 50lb class.
Are lighter weight bows effective? Yes, as long as you place your shots, and don't take shots past a practical limit, or use broadheads that reduce penetration through excessive cut diameter, or shots at bad angles.

These days I'm coming off 2 years of chemotherapy for prostate cancer. A dozen shots are my limit at the moment with a 55lb Hoyt, and I'll work up to twice that before hunting season. I shoot a dz shots twice a day, (I'm 73 and retired, I can shoot whenever I want), and I can land the the first shots on a spot out to 45yds, or more on a good day. That's enough to get venison on the ground. Last year I was shooting 50lbs, and it was adequate for getting two deer in the freezer, with two shots.

It's not how many shots you can take, it's about practicing enough to put one shot where it needs to land. wink

Shoot/Hunt w/:

- 70# Golden Eagle (COLEMAN) Super Hawk Compound (50% let-off)
- 45# SAMICK Sage Recurve

Get strong in life, or in the gym.

Then, spend short periods of time, regularly, practicing form, precision, and accuracy.

I've been doing some reading on 30-40lb bows- experienced accomplished competition shooters say to stay away from 80-85% down off compounds. The 'holding' weight is too light and makes it very hard to get good accuracy.
I'm going to look for a second hand 40-50lb. practice bow.

I saw Ted Nugent on a bowhunting show- he said he likes 46-47-48lb. draw for deer. He made some good points about being able to draw from any angle and the quietness of low poundage bows.
He spoke of getting families started in archery then they go to archery pro shop and the shop doesn't have anything but 70lb. bows. That's mostly been my experience- I haven't been to very many pro-shops but the ones I've been to had nothing but 70's.

I shoot a Hoyt Torrex 50# - 80% letoff (yup due to shoulder issues). Shoots as good as any bow I have ever owned and that has been a bunch since 1984. True you need to shoot with good form, but that should be the case with any bow. Holding weight at 80%/50# is 10#, 80%/60 is only 2# more, not really enough to amount to much.

Draw and holding weight are not issues, even w my health stuff

What is a problem for me is mass weight. A compound loaded up is a friggin boat anchor.

I have a 2024 Hoyt Torrex in green hangin in my back room. Havent even set it up. Much prefer my recurve.

Low # works but I like a little insurance, plus back tension feels better to me when its not too light.

Yes. My wife and young daughters.
It’s pretty surprising how quiet they are and impressive penetration on targets.

I bought a 40-50lb. PSE Bowmadness in the Classifieds for $250. 2 sights , 2 rests , stabilizer- getting it tuned in right now with an HHA single pin I had lazing around.
I've got a dozen Bemen 400 spine & 6 100gr. SlickTrick broadheads.
Deers & hogs +++ better watch-out.

I've been shooting a 50lb bow for many years and I've never had any issues what so ever with harvesting deer and getting pass thrus. My daughter shoots 44lbs with the same results. I'm 63 and my shoulders and back are shot from years of sports and high poundage bows. 50lbs is comfortable for me to shoot and if less poundage means better accuracy I'll take it. If you put a sharp broadhead in the vitals it'll kill no matter the poundage.

I’ve been shooting a pse dna sp since 2015, since then I’ve backed off the weight &Pull is around 55# now & that’s fast enough (270fps). I don’t shoot year round so I start with a few reps & work myself up for those cold mornings. Season starts Saturday here. Good luck everyone.
