Found this recently at a gun shop as I traveled for work and thought I would share as it is not a common caliber in a Sako.
Sako L579 244 Remington with a period correct Unertl Vulture 10x scope.

Extremely rare in 579 and heavy barrel. I would buy one if I found one…

Shrapnel, I sent some pics to your phone as well. Thank you for the advice when I found it and walking me through the age and condition. To be honest, if I found another one, I would probably buy it too.🤣 It will be a good one to add to the Sako collection.
This one has the flat bolt and grooves milled on top of the bolt shroud vs. the cross hatching so it is an early one.
Thanks, Kyle.

Nope, maybe even late 50’s. The 244 didn’t last long and Sako made it in both L57 and L579 actions, with the L579 probably the most rare, as the cartridge was phased out in the early 1960’s.

Not that I doubted Shrapnel but did some digging in the Sako Factory Records and found this-

This one’s serial number is 12979 puts it 1960 at the latest. I would have to do more research to get exact.

244 Remington AKA 6mm Remington.

They are one and the same cartridge. The twist is what is different.

The 244 Rem typically had a 1:12 twist, while the 6mm was updated to 1:9, I believe.
