I reckon I'm more Looney than loyalist.
I have a safe full of great rifles and my fav is the one I'm using at the time.
They all will kill deer if I do my part.
So, which of your kids is your fav....?
Yeah...

The 25-06 has always been a favorite. I have at least one in the stable since the early 90’s. It might not be the primary cartridge or rifle nowadays on my hunts, but I always have one sighted in and ready. If I draw a pronghorn tag this year, I’ve decided the 25-06 will get the nod.

7mm Weatherby Magnum in a MK V since 1978.
308 Winchester, Remington 700 since 1978. How many rounds have you put through the 7 Wby, roughly? I believe its round count is about 430.

270 Winchester at 15 it was my first ‘real’ big game rifle, killed a lot of whitetail with it before I got the looney disease we all have. Now at 43 I’ve come back to it as my main big game chambering. I mainly hunt deer and hogs might get out after elk one day. It just works

30WCF since I was 12 or 13. Haven't killed anything with one since I was a teenager but have always had one on hand. Currently "re-furbing" a Marlin Marauder so it may get out.
30-06 since I was 17. Have always had one on hand and ready to go.
Have had and used several others and favor the 308. It's just so easy to get along with.
Got my first 270WIN last year and can see this becoming a favorite going forward.
Bore size is no substitute for shot placement and Power is no substitute for bullet performance. 458WIN

I have a lot of different cartridges in my safe, but I still come back to the .30-06. Shot my first deer with one, my first centerfire rifle I bought with my own money was an -06. Even today, when I travel to hunt, if I have the luxury of packing a backup rifle, it is my trusty .30-06.

Have Loyalty to a cartridge doesn't fit with my understanding of the word Loyalty. Now I still use cartridges that I used in the 1960s, but "loyalty" is not a correct term. Maybe a phrase like "admiration of attributes" or even just the words "I like" would fit well, but not loyalty.
Some I started out with in the 60s that I still use are: 22 LR 300 Savage 30-06 270 Win.
If I push forward to the 70s I'd add 32-20 38 Special 44 mag 45 ACP 44 Special 357 mag 308 Win. 20 gauge 12 gauge. 375H&H 300H&H
And there are many more that I have used starting in the mid 70 up to now that I still use, but at least as many I used for some time and later sold and cannot say I have really missed them. So cartridges I love and use today are more because they are what a favored gun uses, and have no special magic. They just go to guns I really like. None are useless. But I like guns, and so many cartridges that I use are more because of the guns they fit. Like my 300 Savage and it's use in my Savage-99 or my 30-06 because I have 2 rifles I REALLY like that chamber it, a lever action M95 and an M1 Garand. Same with my 300 H&H. It's a classic Mauser and simply a beautiful classic rifle, but if it were a 30-06 or an 8X57 or a 9.3X62 I'd still love the rifle and simply use what ever it was chambered in. You get the picture............................ Recommend you look up loyalty as an idiom. Quite the education on the use of the English language and word interpretations. Having seen some of your thread responses before, you have used some wonderful cartridges, many of which will never become best sellers, but none the less, are great performers in the field and well proven over their life spans. Unfortunately, our contemporary world is fickle and longing for drive through successes that never were. That's why the 70+ readership yawns at much of todays' new entries. I am reminded of the Remington Seminar of 1978 where the 8mm Remington was introduced. After the presentation the Remington rep asked for questions and Elmer Keith responded with, "What is it good for?". We are seeing the same again with the new Federal 7mm Back Country. Introduced in a market saturated in 7mm cartridges with no rifles in store, no ammunition, no dies, cases or reloading information in a market already starved of primers. This thread has more relevence today as we hold onto and retain loyalty to existing proven performers that have offered stability and consistency in their reliability. We trust them and have reached a point of expectation with them. It is as simple as that. Thanks for contributing. PS: I also agree with your reference to liking the rifle firstly, followed by the cartridge. It isn't stated enough. Ah, yes, well stated. As usual. But then maybe we are a different breed.

35 Remington. Even though this round offers the least attractive ballistics chart its effectiveness at close range hunting is unmatched.

Seems to me there are three cartridges that are pretty much the cartridge to have. #1 has to be the 30-06. Seem's everyone has used it at some point! #2 have to go with the 270 and #3 the 308. I have never shot anything with a 270. Has to be a great cartridge just never turned me on. Just started using a 30-06 about 5 yrs ago as my elk rifle. Now if I'm going elk hunting, getting to old and crippled for elk, It's the rifle I grab. #3 the 308 has been my go to for a lot of years. If in doubt of what to take for years the 308 is what I'd grab. I doubt the 30-06, 270 and 308 will ever be replaced!

For me the .22LR first and foremost followed by the .222 Remington, .270 WCF, .250-3000, 260 Remington, .300 Weatherby, .32-20 WCF, 38-55, 41 Remington, and last but not least the .45-70.
However, I’ve have had more than a few affairs (might actually be called a whore in some circles as my thirst for trying something different seems never ending)!

.30-06, 7mm-08, and .35 Remington. I have always thought the .30-06 would be a suitable cartridge to use on anything in North America. In 40 years of using it, I still firmly believe it. The 7mm-08 in a lightweight carbine has been my go to deer rifle for many years and has always been “just right”. I’m going on an outfitted deer hunt in Saskatchewan this fall, and I believe my Remington Model 7 FS will be coming along. The .35 Remington has accounted for many deer I have taken in the Adirondacks and Catskills. All were taken with the Remington 200 grain Core-lokt in either a Marlin 336 or Remington 141. I believe without fail, every bullet expanded adequately, plowed a straight path through the deer, regardless of the angle, and exited. Very little blood shot meat, and always a good trail of blood. You could literally eat right up to the hole. Textbook performance.

30-06 , 35 Remington, 30-30 , 243 and 44 mag. Places i hunt anymore 150 yards is a long shot with most shots half that distance. 30-06 is really overkill but it's still a favorite as well as some of my favorite rifles are chambered in it.

I have no loyalty to cartridges. There are some I have a particular fondness for. .17 HMR, .17 Remington, .25-20 WCF, .257 Roberts, .32 H&R magnum, .357 Maximum, .44 magnum .. there isn't much in my world one of them doesn't cover.

Kinda surprised at the number of 35 Remington loyalists.
Not a criticism at all. Pretty fantastic deer/bear thumper and generally in handy, easy packin' rifles.
Just not very broadly available or common on shelves.
Always kind of wanted one.
