My newest acquirement, this Springfield Repeater, is a version of the Savage Model 29 made for Spiegel. I say it’s a Spiegel because of the configuration and the Spiegel name plate, this model appears to have never been listed in the full size catalogs, it may have been in special sale catalogs or flyers.

The holes for scope blocks are factory, these could be purchased with a scope.

Spiegel never put their own name on a firearm but often had special models made with features exclusive to them. With the Savage made pumps they had several exclusive models made marked Springfield or Stevens and they started with just Peerless which is first listed in 1934, before that they it appears they just sold the standard Stevens model pump, which would have been the 75. I have never seen an example of a standard Steven Model 75 configured one marked Peerless, so it’s possible the picture was not updated. The Peerless was a version of the Savage 29-S that had a special sight set but with a steel buttplate instead of hard rubber and without checkered wood, which had became standard on the Savage labeled pumps by this time.

The Spiegel’s in order based on serial numbers of observed examples, and very few of each.
-Model 29 action-
PEERLESS, one example recorded serial 126,369K
STEVENS PEERLESS, 126,350K-127,700K
the next models all have a checkered stock with a steel buttplate, grooved forearm, hooded front sight and the barrel drilled & tapped for scope blocks.
SPRINGFIELD REPEATER, 147,700K-150,000K, not found in the regular catalogs, these are among the highest numbers for Model 29 based guns.
-Model 29-A action-
STEVENS MODEL 75-A, 4990K-10290K, another model not found in the regular catalogs.
STEVENS MODEL 29-A, 12680K-29750K (different from those marked Savage Model 29-A)
STEVENS MODEL 49, 31660K-42520K
The Savage, Stevens and different House Brand were all numbered together so the ranges listed are no indication of production of any one version.

PEERLESS & STEVENS PEERLESS

[Linked Image]
STEVENS MODEL 75-A The -A appears to be added and not part of the roll stamp. The front sight is grooved for a hood.
These are not the same as the original Stevens Model 75's, they had the Model information stamped on the barrels and had model 29 actions.

Has anyone seen any other versions?

Some catalog pages-
1933 Spring & Summer, it appears to show a standard Stevens Model 75 pump.
[Linked Image]

1933 Fall & Winter, the same picture is now listed as just the 'PEERLESS', I have never seen an example of this configuration marked PEERLESS, possibly the picture was not updated.
[Linked Image]

1935 Spring & Summer, the picture of the now 'STEVENS' PEERLESS is correct.
[Linked Image]
It's interesting to see Visible Loader's still in stock since this is almost a year after they were discontinued.

Pumps are not listed in 1936 but the Stevens Model 29 shows up in 1937.
This is from the 1938 Spring & Summer.
[Linked Image]
A couple of the special version of Mossberg scopes offered by Spiegel.

1941 Fall & Winter, the Model 49. This is the last I've seen listing a pump 22.
[Linked Image]
You should also note that all the other Stevens models for Spiegel are drilled & tapped for scope blocks and have slings, so, if you find one with the barrel drilled, it might be factory.

In the 1942 Fall & Winter catalog they note that guns were limited to 'stock on hand' since civilian firearms production had ceased due to the war.

very nice Gene! Would the hooded front sight have come as a package with an aperture rear sight? I really like the enthusiasm of the monster buck grip cap embellishment on a 22LR!

Including the Spiegels I have about 32 different and know of a couple more. This is counting different actions, different stamps on the same action and different configurations such as sights and barrels - octagon or round. I also suspect there might be one or two others for some companies, for example, Hibbard, Spenser & Bartlett had house brands based on the Savage Model 25 & 29-A so I assume they also may have had them with the 29 action which was made for about 8~9 years.

Jeff, the PEERLESS's did not have a hooded sights and the later Spiegels with the hooded sight were not offered with a tang sight.

Savage appears to have started making house brand pumps about 1925 starting with a couple versions of the Stevens Visible Loader and then started making versions of the Model 25, they stopped for WWII and did not offer house branded pump 22's after as far as I know. In the 1925 Sears Fall catalog there was a version of the Stevens Visible Loader marke 'RANGER REPEATING RIFLE', the earliest listing of a Savage/Stevens house brand I am aware of. The other Visible Loader one I know of is marked 'Central Arms Co. SURE SHOT'.

Montgomery Wards had the most -
Premier - late 25 based
Premier Trail Blazer - 29 based
Western Field Premier - 29 based
Western Field - 29 based, also a version with a ladder tang sight exclusive to them and No 32 folding leaf rear
Wards Western Field - 29 based, also a version with a ladder tang sight, No 19 windage adjustable folding leaf rear sight standard
Wards Western Field MODEL 80 - 29 based (model number added) they may still have offered the tang sight as an option on these later ones, I have not seen examples <--- ! CORRECTION! I actually have an example, it's pictured below! I guess I should go back through my inventory!
Wards Western Field MODEL 80-A - 29-A based
Wards Western Field MODEL SB80A - 29-A based
Wards Western Field MODEL 81 SB508A - 29-A based

A Wards Model 80 with the special ladder sight and a Sears Ranger with the Savage 29-S sights.

There is a RANGER with T Eaton Co on the side I will get a picture or go trade it for a Reminton model12 before that designation.

Were they all pre drilled? I was looking at one in a gun shop recently and if I remember correctly it was drilled over/through the “savage arms Utica NY” address on the barrel. Would this be correct original? I saw that and was thinking it wasn’t.

I agree with you that one is probably not factory. The ones for Spiegel are the only 22's I know of that were factory drilled and they did not drill them through the barrel stamps.

Norm, I have seen pictures of E. T. Eaton marked RANGER's with 29 and 29-A actions. I forgot to mention those as some others I know of. I have never seen one in the USA though, I'm still looking... Since they are marked with the same RANGER stamp as used by Sears & Roebuck I have always wondered if they were associated with them in some way, but I have not been able to find any link.

I had a post from 2008 on another site with pictures of some of the house brands, unfortunately the pictures were in photobucket and they finally stopped allowing them to display. I found copies -

These have the later extractors and hammers, but the early type triggers that are not contoured to the trigger guard very well.
The later hammers curve up more so if you get the web of skin between your thumb and first finger under it when you open the action, it won't hurt quite as bad... and there will be less blood...

The PREMIER's were not marked on the receivers.
