Randy has built three guns for me, and they all are beauties. He is talented. He is opinionated.

I appreciate that Randy (and his wife) took the time to give us his views. His arguments were logical, such as using a large caliber DA revolver with a short barrel when being attacked by a bear. In such a scenario as he describes, it's only going to be by luck if you can place your shots perfectly - unless you're extremely proficient. Even if not all his points are agreed with, it is certainly worthwhile hearing his opinion and the reasons he put forth for those opinions. He seems to have a reasonable degree of experience on the topic. Criticizing him for taking his time to speak and his health issues is bad.

No, I'm not sure, and that is why I said he "seems". However, some of the things written by other posters on this thread who hold a contrary view "seem" less credible than him. What I like about what he says is the reasoning he gives for forming some of his views. Having shot a bear at very close range in Alaska, I tend more to lean towards Randy's opinion..but, I'm no expert on the matter as there are certainly others who have had multiple close range bear encounters.

It was watching his videos which encouraged me to make a few of my own. I figured, I'm old, I'm confused, maybe that's the recipe for success. From this particular video, I can see that I talk too fast, and don't breathe enough. Also, I've been including too much gunsmithing content. Might should just pull up a chair and sit and talk some crap.
I was surprised to see this clip was less than 13 minutes long. It seemed like a lot more than that. GD

I've met and talked with Randy several times. I find him knowledgeable and very opinionated. Even if he has never been chewed on by a bear he has decided what is a good griz handgun. He does that thru deductive reasoning, a thing that most under 35 don't have.
His labored breathing probably comes from living/filming at 7200'.

Do you know for a fact that he does not have any significant experience with bear encounters?

That's right. From his video, I can deduce that since a 10 mm. is inadequate, no person knowledgeable about big bears would ever use a 9 mm. for defense.

That was my thought, too.
