Recently I purchased a lot of three sight boxes because I had the proper Model 99 sights for two of them.

The third box is for a Redfield No. 70 GH which is for Savage Models 19, 23, and 33. I think this box must be quite old, and perhaps somewhat uncommon, as all of the Redfield boxes I see on the internet are red and white. This box is a dark green with orange printing. While "No. 70 Micrometer Receiver Sight" is printed on the box, "GH" is handwritten after the 70, and "Sav 19, 23, 33" is also handwritten.

My internet search has found a lot of No. 70s, but not a No. 70 G, so I am curious if any of you have a Redfield No. 70 G? My goal is to reunite this box with the proper sight.

Guessing a previous owner repurposed that box to contain a different sight. ??

Or, is the box made with a "70 - ____" where a worker is supposed to fill in the blank with whatever is put in the box?

I think Redfield, at that time, used a generic No. 70 box and then the details were handwritten for the specific sight. There are no "fill in the blanks" on the top of the box, which is where the information in my original post is located, but one end has the following printed on it,

No. 70
with

______ Knobs

"GH" is handwritten following the 70, and "Hunter" is handwritten in the blank in front of Knobs.

This is a similar box.
The Winchester 75 dates 1938-1958

This chart 1954 shows a 70 GT for Savage 19, 23
It also lists the 70 GH which is for Savage 19, 23, 33

Thanks Rick.

The box you show has all printed info regarding the application vs. handwritten.

Also, since my box was issued until 1954 the price of a No. 70 had increased almost 50% from $6.50 to $9.50. (I can't read the price on the photo of the box you posted.)

Copilot - "The Western Gun Sight Company was founded by John Hill Redfield in 1909 in Denver, Colorado. The company initially operated under the name "Western Gun Sight Company" until around 1932, when it was renamed to the Redfield Gun Sight Company due to a lawsuit brought by the Western Cartridge Company'"

The Western box was green. Not sure when Redfield box was changed to red but I would expect it was not to long after the name change...?

I found I have one of the sights, it's just stamped with a G but has the hunter knobs so it would be a GH.

These were probably not used much since they required the receiver to be drilled & tapped and a relief cut in the stock. I don't think any guns were setup for them from the factory.

For anyone curious about the gun it's a Model 1922 Sporter with the correct Stevens scope using factory holes.
