There you have it, the life and story of the Leupold 2.5-8X36.

Hopefully Leupold keeps making this scope and improves all parts of this design.

I had one, I think my son has it now, great compact scope, the scope was a higher quality scope then the 3x9x40, had one of them too. Also had, if you can remember it, the 1.75-6x32 Leupold, I think it was a on 7m-08, another great scope. Just handled a 2.5-8 on my friends Rem mountain rifle last weekend, great combo! My "replacement" for the 2.5-8 is the 5HD 2-10-42, it's a 30mm and can be a bit tip heavy on a light rifle but it's simple and about perfect for most of what I do.

I bought my first 2.5-8X (Vari X III) in '87 for a Ruger RL .257 Roberts. I wanted the 2-7X compact but the store was out, they had this, I had $$ in my pocket, so it went on the rifle instead. Those had the 32 or 33 mm objective instead of the current 36 mm and could be mounted right down on the deck with Leupold's super low mounts. That scope rode on probably 2 dozen rifles, maybe more, before it was on one that I sold. Wish I had it back. I could have filled truck beds with the critters I killed under the crosshairs of that scope. Deer, elk, bear, and truly countless varmints of all shapes and sizes.

Back when you just set it and forgot about it - zeroed at 200 yards and killed stuff they were excellent..........

I have 3 or 4 of them. It's my favorite scope. But my eyes are changing and I will probably be swapping them out.

Just curious, but how does a broken ring equate to a scope failure?

I’ve got 2.5x8’s on both of my Sako Carbines, .338 and .308. Also on a steyr Mannlicher Mod L .243. I recently found a pair of them for 250.00 each. I shot my once in a lifetime Shiras bull with the .338 and took a cow elk with the .308 this fall. I can’t believe how lucky i was that they didn’t grenade on me.

PS- Oh, there was that time I tripped on some old barb wire while hunting creek bottom whitetail and flung my Ruger GSR .223 against a tree in AK bushman fashion. The 2.5x8 held it’s zero and tracks just fine. Again with the luck. Whew.

PSS this is my truck gun and rides in a boyd’s soft case in the bed most of the time. I’m a rebel and tempting fate with reckless abandon.

You are a Whining CLUELESS Professional Victim, who's never even "seen" a good scope, let alone fhuqking "shot" one...you "lucky" kchunt. Hint.

Talk about "all" the "tracking" done on the 223,mainly because it too, will be funnier than fhuqk. Do your BEST,so as to maximize The Oblivious Humor Quotient. Hint.

Just sayin'.................

And in reality, that's all most folks need to do now. I guess my third favorite scope is the 2.5 x 8 Leupold. Probably my second favorite is the harder to find 1.75 x 6 Leupold Vari-x III. But hands down my favorite and most often used, is an old Vari-x IIc, 2 x 7 Leupold. I have trouble seeing any improvement from other scopes, (and I own quite a few) over that particular scope. But then again, I am pretty old school in my guns and the way that I hunt.

The 2.5 x 8 is a good scope, though. And I like it better than most 3 x 9's. I stay with Leupolds for the most part, because I am spoiled by their usually very generous eye relief range. And the 2 x 7 vari-x II was about the best compromise for field if view and power range, and eye relief forgiveness. I have killed a lot of deer on the run, while on 2 power, and a lot more at 200 to 300 yards on 7 power, even in very low light with that scope, mounted on an old Browning BLR 81, in .308 win. Typical shots for me, this year: Doe (head shot) at 35 yards, with 45/70, with 1.75 x 6 Leupold scope, during the straight wall season, #2, 4 point one side, cowhorn on the other side buck, taken at around 180-200 yards, with Browning BAR .308 and Leupold 3 x 9 x 50 vari-x IIc, lung shot. #3, 8 point buck, running across a field, at 200 yards, more or less, with my Browning BLR .308 win and the 2 x 7 Leupold vari-x IIc. The running buck took 4 shots, but I still got him. And I will give the 2 x 7 the slight edge on that kind of shooting, but in reality I could have probably still got the job done with a 2.5 x 8 or one of the other scopes. But the bottom line is I don't need bigger scopes than these for 99% of my hunting.

Actually...REALITY is,if it doesn't/can't track or repeat,it can't/won't hold zero either. Hint.

There isn't some SECRET "Magic" Stay Sighted In Spring, disassociated from the others. That simple Fact, reliably fhuqks with pointy heads,as they tap on the sides of their Reupolds,HOPING that it adjusted SOMEWHERE in fhuqking proximity of where needed(it didn't). Hint.

Just sayin'................

Mine's been dead-on for 20+ years. Dropped, rattled around in the quad gun case, bounced out of the truck gun rack. Cheap ass Lou-o-polds.

I still have at least two 2.5-8x36's mounted on hunting rifles.
(both 84M's, a 243 MT and a 257 Roberts Classic Select)

Granted I haven't shot either one in years but I would bet 50/50 I could hit something.

I have a Simmons 3 x 9 on a 1931 M-54 in 22 Hornet. Works.

The rest are early Leupolds, but fixed M8s like 3x and 4x. They are on pre-64 or pre-war Model 70s. One is a pre-war '06
with G&H sidemount. Alternate a Lyman Alaskan with a Leupold Alaskan. Pretty nice rig. Have had a M8-4X on a pre-64 in 375 H&H. Nothing has fazed it in 35 years.
Have them on early M-70s in 338-06 and 35 Whelen custom M-70. Ol skool is cool.
