Jesus.

That man taught me more about lawn care than I ever could have learned on my own.

Wabi,
Like Kaywoodie, my best teachers were men i worked with in the woods and on the right of way building powerline when i was young. Men like my Dad……
But in answer to your question:
The best was Phil “ Pete” Peterson. He taught drafting and metal shop in high school. He was a Golden Gloves boxer, and he quietly turned away with a smile on his face when i’d had enough from the class idiot/ bully and laid that fugger out in drafting class. Pete met my nervous gaze….. grinned… and never said a word. He was a man’s man and still is.

We need a lot more guys like Pete! I did the same thing my Junior year in High School, only I was the Golden Gloves boxer. The other guy was an all-state lineman on the football team, and he was a horse's ass, and a bully but had a prominent last name, and I was nobody. He took a short nap, and I got a probation officer.

My favorite teacher was Ray Hughs. He taught Industrial Arts and was a gunsmith on the side. He allowed me/taught me how to rebarrel a rifle. This involved starting with a barrel blank and then cutting the rifling, reaming the chamber, cutting the threads and head spacing it to the action. He also taught Trigonometry, and I aced that class for the simple reason that I did not want to let him down.....and I've never used it since.

Grandpa said, "There are two kinds of people in this world, the givers and the takers." " Make sure that you are a giver............to everyone but the takers."

Life: my dad.

School: my 8th grade biology teacher. She was Miss Texas and in Miss America pageant two years prior. Blonde of course. Still remember everything she taught me.

What set him apart Ed?

His ability to articulate the material well beyond the textbook. Always well prepared and time spent with him in his office was priceless. Also, he was an applied mathematician so knew what we engineering students needed. His exams were substantially applied as was the graduate course he created and I took, Perturbations.

I would have to say my late landlord Frank . I met him when I was 18. He was the fastest framing carpenter I’ve ever known. There was another fast carpenter and Frank taught him. I was never fast. I new Frank for 40 years and he had a lot of wisdom. I also seen mistakes Frank made and I learned from that. I’ve had several good teachers in my life . I’ve always enjoyed having older friends but now they are mostly gone. Another man I learned a bit from was named Stanley. He lived to be 95. He seen so much in his life and he had some good stories about the old days. Stan had a car dealership in Jackson and he could remember the names of the people that bought cars from him and type car . Stanley milked the family cow before school as a kid . His mom would separate the milk from the cream and Stan had a milk delivery service before school at age 14 in a model T. My 2 cents.
