My Dad's family came over from Stroud England back in mid/late 1600s. Came in through Norfolk and settled in SC and GA. Mom's side came from Austria and Germany in the early 1700s. Arrived in Philly, settled in SW Virginia. In both cases, America as a Country did not exist yet. I'm guessing they were legal immigrants.

Sam,
Will add.

The first of our kind landed in Philly, and had to swear allegiance to the English king and renounce his German affiliation. Then sold himself into indentured servitude to pay his passage. In less than the 10 years agreed on, his benefactor realiser him based on merit. He soon after turned traitor, and fought in the Revolution.

We call them Patriots.😉

No, it wasn't.
He was involved in the Whiskey Rebellion, but it's not clear how.
Most of the bigger events were in more populated areas.

Mom's side from Germany in the 1600's fought in the Revolution then both sides of the Civil War the Davis' for the South, The Argabrite's for the Union. My Father's parents came over from Syria in 1896 through Ellis Island they were Christian Arabs who got the hell out when the getting was good then settled in the Ohio Valley so my Dad is a first Gen American. Related to the Hatfields on the Davis side of mom's family Logan and Mingo County's West Vergina. A few years back my sister took the DNA test and it came back Scandanavian (German?) and Italian (Syrian?) close enough The Roman Empire ruled the Middle East for a long time. I come from a long line of patriotic ragheads Pop served in the Army Air Corps during WWII, my uncle Charlie who was actually born in Syria then came here as a child was in Pattons Army and took part in the liberation of Bastogne fought street to street, door to door and was decorated head to toe...

Scots-English paternally, late1600s, settled originally in Penn. colony, then migrated to Virginia colony. English maternally, about the same time. Settled in Virginia colony, later migrated south. Oddly enough I do not remember anything about the moves. wink

Both parents’ last names are English versions of surnames found in the Netherlands’ province of Friesland. “De Vries” — the Friesian — is one of the most common Dutch surnames. My great grandparents were immigrants from Friesland in the very late 1800’s or early 1900’s. So, I am a relative newcomer being of only the 4th generation.

These Dutch, like my great grandparent's generally immigrated to areas in Michigan, northwest Iowa (where mine landed), and parts of California. But other areas also to be sure. Perhaps the majority originally came as farmers. At least that’s true here in Iowa.

Most were very conservative and also very religious. Many were Calvinists, and were known for being sober people; very neat, frugal, industrious, and stubborn, not necessarily in that order.

Three Grandparents Irish-born Catholics, one English.

Ancestry.com says 69% Irish, 29% Anglo, 2% Portugese. My father’s kin were merchant sailors out of County Cork so the Portuguese was likely Black Irish. On my mom’s side we have Saint Edmund Arrowsmith, hung, drawn and quartered in 1628 for being a Jesuit.

Most of my family came from Ireland and Belgium in the 1850s. At least those that we can track back. We have one line of French that were in Louisiana and I assume they came there originally from Nova Scotia in that migration but only a guess. Some English but no clue as to when they migrated but we only know prior to 1850s. My family is so mutted up its very hard to figure where, who and when .
Unless you’re a first or second generation immigrant its likely your family tree has a lot of branches from different countries.

Same here, on Mom's side - not sure of time frame, but long ago. (The civilized side laugh )
Dad's parents came over from Croatia around 1900. (The Slav side - last of the barbarians, not that long ago!)
