My first grandson got his first elk today and last month his first deer. He didn’t understand how much bigger elk are. He for sure does now. He made a good shot but she ended dying in a dry wash. He is a pretty decent shot with his muzzle loader about a 125-130 yard shot, she tumbled down the mountain. Then got up for about 35 yards. He is shooting a 300 gr bullet and 80 grains of 777.
His deer was with a 257 Roberts his mom ised to kill her first deer. He is pretty calm doesn’t get overly excited

Those of us that been around the horn a few times when it comes to elk hunting have a different scoring system seldom mention in the "book". A Boone & Crocket cow elk is either skinny or fat, young or old. What makes her a record class elk is how close she dies to a road.
