N California I’d be worrying about mountain lions grin

Closest roadside critter encounter I’ve had was in Montana north of Box Elder. After I had bedded down above the highway on a hill outside a fenceline, a passel of coyotes commenced to howl not far off across the highway. So of course I howled back for a bit.

After I fell asleep one of them fuggers came right up on me, I dunno exactly how close because I was on my feet even before I was fully awake (not bad for a 62yo). I don’t recall having a gun in hand, I woulda had to flounder around for my phone to use the light to find it grin

I was in a campground in SoCal, sleeping outside on the ground when I was "attacked" by a herd of raccoons!

I stood up and yelled at the bastids and a big ol' boar coon stood on it's hind legs and bared it's teeth at me. All I had at the time was stick. I'd have been in trouble if they all bum rushed me.

Bird, Forget mtn lions, although numerous, the least of all threats. Black bears on the edge of highways with frequent deer roadkill, campgrounds, ranches and farms. Once they get desensitized to the presence of man, they are totally unpredictable. If you hear their jaws snapping, they are ready to fight and rarely back down. In May they are protective of cubs...August to Labor day they will defend feeding areas aggressively, berry patches, and stream banks with spawned salmon carcasses. Forget the warning shot, to them, it is the sound of the dinner bell to a fresh gut pile.

Well this is a fine pickle we're in, should'a listened to Joe McCarthy and George Orwell I guess.

Hey, thanks for the info. It’s funny what we obsess on. Most times the real threats it turns out are the things we never saw coming.
