Shot at 20 yards while stillhunting a ridge near an edge. Not the biggest buck I've had in my sights this season, but it felt like a good day to hang a buck tag.

I'd spent most of the day still hunting along some tracks, late in the afternoon they lead me to a chain of small "thinnings" that ran along the foot of a steep ridge. More open than the rest of the forest but not quite qualifying as clearings, probably the remanants of some long dried beaver ponds. These had large amounts of fiddleheads, and much evidence of deer pawing them up. I've never quite understood why deer wait until they need to paw through the snow to show any interest in fiddleheads. Even more odd, moose like them too but only seem to feed in patches that grow on hillsides, most likely because they dont have to bend down as far to eat them... enough pontificating on fiddleheads...

Recognizing that I was in exactly the right place at exactly the right time I slowed right down, probably taking a hour to cover 200 yards. I'd sat myself down on a handy log for a few minuets when I heard a stick break at the edge of the clearing, and shortly after this guy wandered out of the bush 20 yards away.

180 grain Interlocks. I shot a moose with them this year and found them under the hide on the far side after punching through the far shoulder blade. This deer was a bang-flop, at 100 yards the kills are not usually so quick but it remains one of the better multi-species loads I've used in the 30-06.

That particular rifle shoots pretty much any bullet I've tried to the same POI, even different weights somehow, so I could easily go to multiple loads. Most of my deer are shot at 40 yards or less though, so heavy Interlocks generally work well.
