I would try the nosler accubond 180 and hornady outfitter 180 but good luck finding them and not cheap either..... im debating on just going back to my 30-06

when the axe came into the woods many of the trees said at least the handle is one of us.

The 165TTSX was designed for the 300 vs 168. But yes you can use any of the ttsx/lrx with confidence! It’s my go elk medicine majority of the time. Or 180 Sierra game kings are affordable yet designed for hunting and great at the range in off season.
The ttsx can get expensive to fling all off season.

IMHO with all the powder, I would be shooting 180 mono or good 200+ cup/core.

All of them do something better than the 30-06, but none of them do everything as well.

Too much power for under 300 yards but yes, this is what I would use too.

The 300 Win Mag and a well constructed bullet are as good as it gets for elk and elk sized animals. I personally prefer the 180 NP because they have never failed me, but there are many good choices.

with a accurate rifle , a good scope with a bi-pod ,good handloads using a 300 Win mag. i see no reason not to be able to shoot out to 500 yards, if you know your rifle and have practiced some days elk do have a big vital area .

I’ve used the 180gr Partition and 168gr TTSX out of a 30-06. Bang/Flop on Roosevelt elk. Should translate to the bigger case just fine. I’d be tempted to run the 200gr Partition, just for fun.

200gr partition "just for fun". It should be mandatory in a 300wm. Especially if elk are on the menu. Run them at 2,900 fps, and thank me later. Or something like that. That was always the velocity I tried to keep them at, when running a 300WM, back in the day. If a 30-06 pushing a 200gr Nosler partition will penetrate an elk stem to stern, a 300wm will do just the same. If you call that "fun", so be it...

If you are a vegetarian. Real men use the 200gr partitions in their 300 magnums..

180’s & a 300 WM = good combination! memtb

Elk catch those like a catchers mitt, from the 300 magnums. The reason I went to the 200gr partition.. Learned that a long time ago. Run them around 2,900 fps and you get complete pass thru's. DRT generally. I lived in elk country and hunted them every year, so take that for what you want, ol buddy..

When I go back to hunting elk with a rifle, that is probably the route I will go.

Let’s see all the pics of the dead elk.

I have a Remington xcr2 in a McM edge stock. To be honest I am kind of over the recoil you get with 180s so I am considering dropping down to 165s or 150s. That stock seems to punish you more than other stocks I have used. My seekins 338 win mag with 225s feels better and my 7mag with 180s is nothing compared to that rifle.

I agree. I cut my 300win to 20” and put a harvestor EVO on it. Also loading 155 scenars. Have only started with some load work so can’t comment on game performance yet. The reduction in recoil is very noticeable. I would sure be interested in what you end up doing.

Funny how none of these elk expired without a single partition. This is just this fall and 180 grain NBT seem to defy that logic…

I’m a “head case” for the use of mono’s…….in my little mind, a 180 mono would be a great choice. With a cup & core…..a 200 gr. partition would be a good choice as well! 😉 memtb
