I took my nine year old Grandson hunting yesterday to fill a doe tag. His dad has not had a chance to hunt yet this year. There house was damaged by a tornado earlier this year when Hurricane Milton hit Florida. They are still making repairs. So it was up to the little man to put one in the freezer. He loves to hunt and eat venison.

We left camp about 4:30 in the morning. It was 28 degrees with frost on the ground. It was pretty chilly for Florida. We made it to the stand and got comfortable as we waited for daylight. I thought I would bring the little buddy heater along this trip. I thought it would be nice for Merritt. After about 10 or 15 minutes it warms up the box blind and you can turn it off.

The morning started out slow. We didn't even see a squirrel till around 8:00. then about 8:15 Merritt tapped me on the leg and quietly said "Pop Pop Deer". I looked through the the bino's and saw two does in the pines. I told him to get ready. The first doe steeped into the open. I told him the second doe was bigger, that's the one I want you to shoot. Well The big doe never stepped out of the pines into the shooting lane. After a few minutes they walked off. I told him. be patient, we still have plenty of time.

About 20 minutes later He tapped me on the leg again and said "Deer". He always see's them before me, young eyes. I glassed them and there were three does at about 125 yards out walking single file straight towards us. I told him to be still and quiet. They got to an opening at 75 yards. They were all shooter does, But again the biggest one was in the back. I told him to take the gun off safe and shoot the biggest one when he had a shot.

Well the other two were in front of the big one and he couldn't shoot until she was clear. After a couple of minutes They all suddenly snapped to attention and looked in the same direction. They were alerted to something. I knew they were ready to bolt. I told him don't wait for the biggest one. Get on the middle one and squeeze the trigger now.

He's a good shot, and it only took a couple of seconds for his 6.5 Grendel go off. The doe was quartering towards him. He made a perfect shot. The bullet entered the front side shoulder and exited just behind the off side shoulder. She turned around made a jump in the direction she came from and crashed about 10 yards from where she was shot.

He was using his AR in 6.5 Grendel with Hornady 123gr SST'S. It's topped with a Trijicon Credo 1-6x24 LPVO. I told him I think your ready for a bolt gun. He just replied, No not yet, I really like my AR.

The Doe weighted 105 lbs on the camp scale. That's a good healthy doe in our neck of the woods. She will eat well. There's nothing better than hunting with the Grandkids. I am truly Blessed.

Congratulations to the young man!

I Agee with him, if he likes what he has why change?

Congratulations to all!!

Will Munny: It's a hell of a thing, killing a man. Take away all he's got and all he's ever gonna have.

The Schofield Kid: Yeah, well, I guess they had it coming.

Will Munny: We all got it coming, kid.

Well done. Don't dis that AR platform. For their age and size the stocks and grip to trigger length etc usually work MUCH better than any bolt gun.

Bought a predator 6.5 creed a while back. Ruger sent a free'Youth" stock. yeah, right, its the same stock just a bit shorter. I can control that with a saw and pad.... they never downsized the stock dimensions...

Anyway until they are ready for shots beyond say 200 yards, the 6.5 ppc will work super for him. And I've killed quite a few similar size deer out to almost 600 with an AR in 223 over the years....

We can keep Larry Root and all his idiotic blabber and user names on here, but we can't get Ralph back..... Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, over....

Yea, your right. Think I'm gonna let him keep shooting the AR. He has shot several pigs and two deer with it. all perfect shots. The pigs and his first deer were all DRT. never even took a step. I'm a Proud Pop Pop.
