Back in the dark ages of the 70's, in our area, BK was about the only burger place with flame broiled burgers.

I'm not fan of a FF burger cooked on a griddle

At least the BK ones had some charring on them.

Not to mention it was 2 blocks from work and I could get my order of a double whopper w/ cheese and a strawberry shake, and usually onion rings but sometimes the fries and gobble it down and get back to work within the allotted 1/2 hr. Quick smoke on the drive over and while waiting for it to get out the window, eat fast, quick smoke on drive back, and back to work for another 2 hrs without a break.

Followup Report:

Had the #2 cheeseburger single, animal style, w/fries and lemonade. Thought the burger was just fine. Patty was a bit thin but cooked properly. Pretty oozy with the extra sauce. Fries were nice and hot, tasted like potatoes, lightly salted and LOTS of them. (Ate about half.) Lemonade was nice, not overly sweet. Total bill $8.44 which was about 2/3 of what competing meals cost lately. Place was packed at noon, but service was friendly, quick, and somebody even came by to ask how the food was. Eating area was spotless. I left satisfied but not stuffed; just right for lunch.

I'll go back. I prefer the flame-cooked taste of a Carl's Jr burger but the slight mustard twang of animal style largely made up for that.

in 1975 I could, and did, regularly eat 5000-6000 calories a day (probably 4000+ when beer was excluded. )

And I didn't gain weight.

The job I had required I lift a 10lb or so pan of bread (including the weight of the bread), from near floor level on a rack all the way to above head high and place said pan on the oven shelf just above waist high ........................every 3-4 seconds..................... Without bumping the pan and making the bread fall. Sometimes adding a lid (2lbs maybe) to the pan for those folks that like that flat top bread.

It was nothing for me to eat 3/4 of a large pizza and salad at one sitting, along with beer.

Blessed or cursed with a relatively high metabolism until I hit about 40 or so. Then, when I was working in the woods, walking up and down streams all day, I could only tolerate 3-4000 or so before having to watch my weight.

Now, as an old man, I look at 3/4 of a pizza and dream and also gain weight just looking at it I think.

Whataburger is still pretty good and better than most chains, but not what they once were. As most chains expand, quality and consistency across all locations tends to suffer (not a revelation to anyone I'm sure). I've had poor burgers from them at some locations, but seldom so. Wasn't too impressed with one I had in Mississippi some years back. The family sold the business to some out of state investment group a few years ago too. But I've eaten Whataburger quite a few times since then and they are still good. But they aren't great like they once were IMO.

It used to be standard that Whataburger toasted their buns with butter way back when for instance. I'm sure one can still request that when ordering though and likewise have your onions grilled. Extra little touches like that make a difference.

In N Out may do a better job on their home ground in California than their out-of-state locations as well.

Best burgers really aren't from any chain of significant size.

InNout for the win.

California beats the fùck outta Tejas for the ff burger

Crazy, isn't it? The next thing you know, they'll be putting sliced beets on their burgers.

Nah, you're thinking of Arby's Roast Beef.

With horseradish sauce.

Yes. I get a whole slice of raw onion added as well to my animal style burger.
Should I ever have an urgent need for a burger, and see an In and Out, I will have to stop for one.

Last one at one of their places was probably around 1991 or so.

Kingman has one right off I-40. Easy Peasy. Flagstaff got one now, right behind Campus Coffee Bean!

Been to the one in Kingman 4 or 5 times Double Double raw onions fry's and a shake.
Ya gotta have the shake to set the whole meal off.
I will have to try the animal style

Never knew they had a secret menu,

We ate at one in Ogden a couple of years while driving to Idaho and we both were not impressed. As noted, undercooked fries and we thought the bun was just dry and tasteless as was the meat. That said, we may eat a few fast food burgers a year. A regional (San Antonio) chain P.Terry's makes a good meal. Relatively inexpensive as well.

Wrong question to be asking here.........................Most guys here would trade a good InNOut burger for a McRib.

Had a hankering so went for a Double Double Animal style with fries and a coke. Never have asked for well done fries but figured I'd give it a go. They were twice as greasy just like everybody elses fries. Lame.

$11.20
