I was driving passed a local park this afternoon right after school had been dismissed. I observed two little tikes with their back packs on running and sliding on the ice on a pond inside the park. The ice was less than 2 inches thick. My heart went into my throat, and I got a sick feeling in my stomach. By the time I drove down to the pond they were stepping onto the shore, then over the dam and on their merry way. I started to leave and then thought better of it. Someone needs to know what just transpired. I stayed at a distance and followed those two half pints home. They no more than were in the house when I rang the doorbell. Dad came to the door. I told him what I had just witnessed, and I could tell by the look on his face that it hit home. He thanked me while the kids looked up at me like I was the big mean tattle tale.

Don't take for granted that your kids/grandkids understand the perils of thin ice. Put the fear of God into those little buggers in regards.

You absolutely did the right thing. I hope the dad appreciated you letting him know and hope he made it a "teaching moment" that they won't soon forget.

Good deal.

I had a kid run out in front of me in a subdivision, I stopped about 3 inches from him, he was chasing a fuqking ball. I went on my merry way but the more I thought about it the more it pissed me off, on the way out of the subdivision i stopped at the house and informed the dad that I had almost killed his son 20 minutes before, just the look on his face told me that it would never happen again.

I think you did the right thing

But it depends on the tikes' age and experience with the water involved.

There were grown men with sleds and shacks on about 2" of ice yesterday near here.
Solid Ice? hardly...
But no disasters either.

I was 9 when we moved to where the water always froze in winter. The kids I ran with knew full well when they could be on the ice. Raised that way
But 9 and 10 year old boys aren't tikes...

Christmas Day, 1983. I remember it well as my Dad’s Dad, my GrandDad died the day before.
Was home from College and went to help Dad and my little Bro to feed the cows and “chop ice” which consisted of taking an ax to our big stock tank and breaking up the ice so the cows could get water. 🤪

It was one of the worst cold spells on record for N TX at the time. The high Temp for 2 weeks prior had been 10 degrees. With lows at night in the minus teens. 🤪

After swinging our axes for over an hour, while Dad fed the cows, little bro and I realized the stock tank was frozen completely through and through. 😬

Little bro and I had a “skating contest” on our Tony Lama boots to see who could go the furthest without busting our ass. 🤪

Dad comes back and sees us and started screaming that we’re going to “go through the ice and drown”

I laughed and showed him the tracks where one of our big black angus bulls had just walked across the stock tank minutes before. 🤪

He was still pissed off at us when we got home for Christmas dinner. 🤪😂🤠

Don't much care to mind someone elses business. You did and became a good guy by caring enuf to be a "bad guy", alot of people would have said [bleep] it and drove off giving darwin a better chance. There was a time when the term " a good neighbor" meant something welldone bringing the concept forward. Mb

You are right, Ice is Dangerous.
I came across a cow that had broken through the ice on a pond four or five years ago. I spent over an hour risking my tail getting the cow back on dry ground. My pucker factor was pretty high saving that cow, that belonged to someone else.

It takes someone with the courage to step up and say what needs said sometimes. You did well.
Hopefully Dad will tan some butts. I know my Dad would have used his bare hands to warm my but and drive the lesson home.

I pulled a fellow fisherman out of thin ice in 20 feet of water several years ago. He had been in the water about 10 minutes when I got to him and I could tell by the look in his eye he was about to let go and give up. Thankfully, with divine intervention or just plain luck I accomplished the task. I had to step up and so did you by following through.
