Helping my uncle with fading vision pick a new scope. He likes my old Weaver Classic Extreme with a heavy duplex and illuminated red dot in the center.

He is putting it on a 243 for deer, and will likely not shoot further than 300 yards. He does not dial or use a reticle for wind or elevation, so simple SFP is fine. Looking for 2-4x on the low end, and 9-12 on the high end of magnification. I'm thinking 40-50mm objective would be fine.

He'd like to keep the budget around $400 and is fine with buying used.

What would yall recommend? Here's a pic of the reticle from my weaver

I'd call Doug & ask if he'll have another hella special on this Hawke Endurance 2.5-10 x 50 LR Dot 8x scope.

It checks a lot of your boxes, & the Christmas Spirit might get ol' Doug to park it in your uncle's price range.

Worth a call, anyway.

FC that looks like a great option! I'm not terribly familiar with Hawke, I'll look into it!

A few years ago I bought a Burris that sounds like just what you are looking for from Doug. Don't know if it's still available but it was well under your budget and has been a good scope.

I am continually astounded at how quickly people make up their minds on little evidence or none at all.

I have lately been looking for pretty much the same scope you are. I found a GPO (German Precision Optics) 4-12x with illuminated dot reticle here on the Classifieds and I'm currently waiting for it to arrive.

There’s this one also if they’re in stock. Doug might have an idea when they’ll be available again.
According to Athlon it’s the same glass as the Helos just in a 1” tube. Has the same reticle as your picture above.Argos 2-12

I'll recommend the Leupold vx-freedom 3-9x40 illum. firedot duplex scope. Price is fair too.

Great scope! Its my heavier 223

All of them do something better than the 30-06, but none of them do everything as well.

I have a Bushnell Engage 3-9x40 and completely happy with it. I have it on my loaner 30-06. I do not know if Doug carries Bushnell.

If you can find a used Burris Fullfield E1 3-9x40, Illuminated 3P#4 Reticle that's another good option. I have 4 of them and I wish Burris still made them.

One thing about a scope that needs batteries....when will they go DEAD ??.....when will they LEAK and ruin a scope ??....just a matter of time when eather one happens !

Spend the cash and just get the best made with out the use of batteries....a Trijicon Accupoint that use radioactive crosshair dot or post will last around 10 years or more...I have several that are 15 years old and still working OK just not real bright... for $99 send it back to Trijicon will add new material....

Plus i have had them on 458 WM, 458 B&M and 50 B&M and never have had a problem firing 1000's of rounds cannot say that about any major brand now being made !

Only thing stopping be from buying a Trijicon is the fact that I can buy three Hawke illuminated scopes for less money, so even if the illumination went out every 5-10 years I’d still come out ahead in the long run…but yeah I still want a Trijicon.
