I'm in love...1881 Marlin 40/60. She's obviously been refinished but I'll bet she can still kill a deer...

What a rare beauty! And I like the purpose you're intending with it! IDK anything about that cartridge, but it more than deer capable, with what I know of the 45-60! Keep us informed on progress?

These are very nice rifles and have great history. They were Marlins first lever rifle. There were approximately 20,535 manufactured between 1881 to 1903. There were approximately 6,261 produced in .40-60 caliber. There are 12,482 made with 28" barrel. ( I assumed yours has 28" barrel.
Yours is the 4th variation model.( confirmation can be made with serial number) Thanks for sharing
