Wanting to get one for a ‘24 Tacoma.

Trying to decide between soft roll up and hard trifold.

What kind do you have?
Why pick that style?
Pros/cons of each?

I have had fiberglass one pieces, tri fold hard, tri fold softs, and roll ups....and the soft rollup is the absolute winner for me. They are cheap, they allow full use of the bed at any time, and a half decent one keeps stuff in the bed dry enough. I am not worried about security beyond "out of sight, out of mind."

I currently have a "Tactix" brand I got from eBay. It uses a rail system and cable latch, and its been absolutely perfect for $150.

Wife found one at a local shop she likes, after asking me to post here. 🤷‍♂️

It’s a trifold. Concerned about rolling vinyl in the cold. I’m sure that shortens lifespan.

Anyway, she’ll have it in 2 weeks.

Thanks.

Had one of the tri-fold hard tonneau covers for about 1.5 years. It functioned fine and served its purpose, but walking from side to side to undo the latches, then fold it up, and then secure the clips got old after a while. I replaced it with a Pace Edwards Switchblade and it's much easier day-to-day. Made in the USA and worth the price, IMO.

Much more convenient for stuff like this. Roll up the tonneau, load bike and gear, unload at the trail, toss the ramp and other stuff in the bed, close the tonneau to keep stuff secure while I ride:

I've had both hard and soft covers. By far prefer the hard tri-fold. Easier to use, and more secure. Also like how they are more flush to the bed height vs sitting on top of the side rails like the Truxedo top. Go Bakflip MX4 and don't look back. Worth every penny!

I bought a Tyger soft roll up on Amazon in late 2019 for my Tundra. $150 on sale After 6 months, I bought one for my old 2006 F250 because I liked it so well.

I like the full use of bed when it is rolled up. It’s easy to roll up or roll out. 99% watertight. I know a good knife could defeat it, but it keeps stuff out of sight and no worries of needing to secure stuff when going down highway.

soft roll up on 2 trucks... full use of bed when needed and especially handy when traveling and you have to haul something large, roll it up and go......

I had a Backflip fold up style. Really liked it. Would fold up so you could use the whole bed, or partially fold up to use gooseneck hitch. Con was that it wasn't really a secure cover. Bought a Diamondback on Black Friday. Heavy duty, locks so much more secure. Still pretty easy to install or take off. Con is that I'll need to take it off to use the gooseneck or 5th wheel hitch. So, really depends on your needs. Personally I hate the roll-up style. Have friends that use them and they seem to flap in the wind and don't give much security.

How many people I stalled their own? It seems like it should be simple. What was your experience?

Couple bolts. Couple pieces of weather stripping. 3 quick clamps on a side. 30 minutes.

I owned Diamondback metal covers on my last two trucks. They are extremely sturdy and you can secure stuff to the top of them as well. Easy to install. Probably the most secure cover you can buy.
But I grew tired of the limited height for sliding items underneath it and ordered a fiberglass shell for my current truck.

They all have pros/cons. I have used several and latest is a Retrax Pro (well, the GM branded one, but same exact cover). Its my favorite so far. I’d prefer a nice fiberglass cap, but honestly couldnt justify the additional cost.

Appreciate the replies.

I’ll try to remember to report back when this unit arrives.

I have the hard trifold currently. Have had the rollup kind with aluminum frame in the past. I like the hard version better. Seems to handle the weather better in regards to leaking although neither type is bad.

I’ve a had a soft roll up and a hard lockable.

Got rid of both. If forced to pick, soft roll up.
