Hello all, I have read several accounts of tight choke tubes being used with TSS. I intend to use TSS in a Beretta 391 which has interchangeable choke tubes. If I'm not mistaken many of the tighter tubes suggest not to be used with steel shot. Would this not hold true for Tungsten as well? What guidelines can be used? I wouldn't want to damage one of my barrels. Thanks, Rick

Tungsten and steel aren't close to the same in malleability. Some TSS will blow out a pattern with a tighter choke, however.

The problem with steel shot and tight choke tubes comes from large size steel shot bridging (#2 and larger), and damaging chokes. Tungsten does not have this problem as the shot sizes generally used are #7 and smaller.
Browning A5 sweet 16, Maxus 12ga, and X bolt, 6.5PRC #269 Schwacker, 650gr total weight, 30%FOC Ugly Stick Ultralight and spiderwire 6lb stealth braid for everything.

I'll be shooting #3 Tungsten, at least to start. I'm thinking I'll probably go with a factory full and see what happens. Let me know what those with experience think please. Thanks, Rick

Good god man, what are you shooting with #3 tungsten? Deer? Pterodactyls, possibly elephants? And at what distance?
Oh, and believe it or not, deer bite. Fairly hard.

It would be far more sensible to start with IC choke rather than Full as tungsten tends to pattern tighter than lead. This would also greatly lessen any potential issues regarding shot/choke compatibility. Unless a tungsten/polymer pellet, I would place any of the large pellet sized tungsten/iron or other alloys closer to steel than lead in regards to its interactions with chokes. And #3 tungsten would be considered large.

I use Cylinder in the right barrel and IC in the left, whether it a 12 or 20ga, ducks or geese.
With TSS, I have #5 and #7's, with 'regular' tungsten, I use #6's.

Light modified is what I got the best patterns with with number 3s If you have shot enough patterns with other chokes and LM and TSS to have valid results and conclusions, you answered your own question. The first adverse sign would be chokes no longer go in and out as easily. One companies choke recommendations for large TSS is down at the bottom. It’s true…. Google is your friend. https://saltcreekammo.com/products/triple-threat-coyote-deer-and-hog-tss

I use a .660 turkey choke for 2 3/4 --12 gauge loads with 8.5 TSS and I've shot out to 80 yards with it and it shoots fantastic.

#5 tungsten will kill deer/hogs/coyotes farther away than folks have any business trying them. #3 tss would probably put someone’s bike-riding kid in the hospital from three counties away. Scary how much that stuff penetrates and at what ranges. I can’t imagine a need for #3s unless I was in bear country or Africa.

The 20s on hand are a Savage F/M 311 or a Superposed UL IC/IM opinion...I think both are unsuitable. What do you think. Time for a throw down ?
