I have zipper pouches on the sides of my recently purchased gun cases and I put a box of ammo in the pouch when I get the gun out to take it anywhere. That way I have SOME ammo with the gun and that could save the hunt. Using rifles like 250 Savage, 260 Remington, 264 Win Mag, etc., the only place I'm going to find ammo is at home. The penalty for screwing this one up can be severe so I try to pay particular attention to the checklist when I am packing.

I hiked in to my elk campsite on opening day. My wife and I had camped/scouted a weekend or two prior and I cached what I needed there. My plan was to hike in, set up camp, have an early lunch, and start hunting. I got camp set up and found that the only food I had was the granola bar and a few honey stinger stroopwafels. Luckily, I was only about 3 miles in and a 30 minute drive from Aspen because that wasn't going to do it for a 10-day hunt.

Asked my son-in-law why he wasn't shooting those big does and he sends me this picture. Took a day off from work to go hunting and didn't bring any bullets. He'll never forget this, making memories hunting. ![[Linked Image from i.postimg.cc]](https://i.postimg.cc/vZZhnf7Z/image.jpg) He forgot his “bullets”? Really? I expect “bullets” from the non-hunting, non-shooting public, not a hunter.

We had a guy forget the key for his trigger lock. That cost him opening morning and a 200 mile round trip back home.
No ammo along says something about hunting with a common cartridge. My brother used to routinely forget the keys for his Masterlock trigger lock. He became very adept at using a screw driver to remove the lock. I never had to do it until recently when I could not find the key for the lock on one of my handguns. Not a key on the ring of lock keys worked, even though I had verified that I could open every lock with the keys on that ring. WTF? With a little patience and coaching, over the phone, from my brother, I removed the lock. I junked the lot because there was no key that would open it. How this happened, I don’t know. FYI, in Canuckistan, I have to lock my handguns and store them in a “locked opaque container”.

haha mmadec a couple rookie mistakes in my life ... first that comes to memory is once, deer stalking, after about one and a half hours walking gently, I find a monster roe buck ... rifle, a K95 kipplauf still unloaded ... I take one cartridge out of the cartridge belt and .... ohhh ... wrong 6XC ammo for my 5,6x50R barrel I was carrying at that time ... I almost fainted hahaha ... run back to the car to get the right ammo and back to find the buck exactly in the very same place like he was waiting for me ... after two hours and in the middle of the day when he should have been bedded in full cover ... never forget it

Yep. I bring my favorite rifle of the time, which is usually some exotic weirdness like the Swede or 250 savage. And then I throw another rifle in the truck in 270 or 243.
Never want to be somewhere 400 miles from the closest place with ammo that fits my custom toy.
So far haven't forgotten ammo. But give me time.

Last year I had to check the head screens on the irrigation ditch, it’s about 15 miles round trip. It was deer season so I put a model 70 on the quad. I have a gun rack in the garage. There were several rifles in the rack. Coming back on the property there was a buck crossing broad side.
I got off the bike grabbed the rifle……….it was the wrong one! It had only been boresighted not zeroed.
Oooops!
That deer has become a freaking pet. My wife has scolded it off her rock garden several times this year.

About 10 years ago, I went out to the blind in the dark. I was sure I had brought the ammo, but I could not find it. I finally dashed all the way back to the cabin and found my extra box and then rushed back out. It was about a mile round trip. It was just getting light when I got back in the blind. There was the original box of ammo on the shooting rail.
Bleah!

I am in the woods as I type. My bowels are boiling, and I realized I forgot TP. May have to cut the top off of a sock. Pics to follow.

Friend showed up to camp once with a 700 in 280 and had brought 30-06 ammo. Just add a little pressure and make that 280 into a real rifle......🤪

I have seen several occasions where guys forgot their guns. Truck loads of other gear and never put their gun in the truck. My rifles and my box with my bino harness and extra ammo are the first thing load in the truck.

All my rifles have their own soft cases with a pocket. I keep some ammo and a bore snake in the pocket. Most have a few of those little packets with an oil rag inside. I rarely use any of it but its there and makes me feel prepared.

Doh! Hate when that happens!

I am glad we can haul a loaded/semi loaded weapon and/or don't have to keep ammo and weapon separated and/or locked.
I will catch some flame for this but I can handle it.
