Icing aint no joke. I lost a helluva good friend and roommate when an ATR went down in Roselawn, IN on Halloween, 1994.

I'm more than glad to sit peaceably when told the plane has to delay takeoff to go get deiced.

RIP, Brad, and all the folks on that AK plane.

Why does it take 1-2 years to get the official results? Lab/ inspection place back-log?

When my FIL plane was pulled up on the Cour D'Alene Lake dock, the inspector, having talked to Russ, took one look at the engine and said - and I quote - "That's it then!"

Mechanic changing the oil there had put in a fixed gear oil plug instead of the one for retractable gear, which when it came up, broke off the elephant ears, draining the oil on climb-out.

That was cut and dried, but still the official report didn't come out for months, perhaps a year or more. Don't remember, but it seemed an unreasonably long time.

las: I agree with you. A good friend I flew A-4's with was retired and giving a biannual flight review in a RV-12. The aircraft was found in a shallow pond with 2 fatalities. No information for over a year. Much later the accident cause was determined to be bird strikes. At the crash site before the casualties were removed from the aircraft feathers were found in the cockpit and were sent to the National History Museum. The report within a week identified the feathers were from blue winged teal.

Old article and I believe that the item of interest was the plane.

Especially with that belly pod they run on them. That thing impacted so hard that the victims probably didn't feel the impact.

Usually there is a preliminary report in short order that is very high percentage of cause.

Preliminary reports from the NTSB suggest that the plane was overloaded with cargo and baggage by more than 1,000 pounds at takeoff, a critical factor that may have contributed to the crash. Investigators are examining whether the excess weight affected the aircraft’s performance, particularly in light of reported icing conditions.

The plane was loaded in UNK. West Coast Aviation handles ground service for most airlines servicing UNK. WC employee would have handed the pilot a manifest showing pax, and baggage and weights. Very unlikely the manifest showed the plane over weight. Apparently mistakes were made and the pilot thought the plane was in limits. I am reluctant to believe the pilot would have departed with a plane he knew that was far overweight!!

Quick numbers show fuel burned was well under 400#... so still over 600# over.

Mark Begich, Joaquin Jackson, and Heller resistance... Three huge reasons to worry about the NRA.
