Hi all,

Been eyeing a shooter Model 94 in 30-30 for a while. Found one in a local shop that looks nice. Smooth action. Evenly Worn finishes and used but not abused wood. The one obvious problem is that on right hand side of the buttstock there's a very minor 1.5" hairline crack extending from the buttplate right where the top screw is. Is this going to be a major problem with this rifle? What may have caused it? Overzealous tightening of the screw? Wood drying out from age? Thanks for any help.

would have to know much more, including asking price.

Nowdays $500. is about the going price for a really nice pre 64, 94 30-30. Replacement stocks can be had from midway for pre and post 64 94's. About $75 for a buttstock. Was it me, and I really wanted the gun I'd offer $400. with the cracked stock it should bring less than the $500. asking price.
I've got a 1957 mfg. 94 30-30 in 95% condition that I have $500. in.

Thanks for the info and the welcome. Actually I've been around for a little bit, just haven't had much to contribute yet. Have learned a lot though. Model 94's must be the new Model 70's. I have seen some outrageous bids on the auctions sites lately. Local shops have always been high.

I agree with Virgil, $500 is on the higher end for the kind of condition you describe. Your location may dictate how you would like to proceed. I have 12 gunshops within a 40 minute drive from my house. If I had to drive 2 hours to get to gun shows or shops, then the price of gas for my truck starts to play in the equation. If because of where you live you do not get that many chances then by all means try to get him down to what you are willing to pay. I recently got the very nice 1951 mfr. in .32 below for $450, but it was darn near perfect for its' age.

The hairline crack was probably the result of overtightening the screw. Will not be an issue other than cosmetic.

Virgil's estimate of value is about right in this area, also.

That is an easy fix..take the stock off and spread the crack just a little put some glass in it and it the crack with an airhose very quickly to spread the glass, wipe off the outside,wrap it and let it set. If you not inclined any good smith should fix it for a pitence..

If you replace the stock with after market or repair the crack the gun has lost significant value. Why bother unless the rest of the gun is in 90% or better condition? For that price I'd keep shopping. It's still not hard to find a real gem for that price if you spend some time looking around. As far as what caused it until you buy it and break it down you will never know and it could be bad sign. Even $400 for the condition it sounds to be in with a broken stock is not exactly a great buy.

So......whats a post 1964 30-30 Model 94 bringing these days...very clean...low miles..little wear ?? See what kinda deal I got a year or so ago...

Post 64, 94's in nice condition bring about $300. in my location. (western Oregon)

They are listed at about $400 here in southern Idaho but Cabelas has driven all gun prices up.

The people at those Cabela's gun rooms outta be locked up for highway robbery. I have seen some first class trash getting pawned off for high prices there. Just obscene.

There is one coming to Billings, MT soon...everyone is excited about it...if only they knew!!
