Recently bought a 16 gauge reloader. Duh! I'm a 16 gauge freak! Now I gotta figure out powder, shot, wads and primers.
1) most of the shooting will be with a 1931 vintage Remington "Sportsman" 16 gauge.
2) I've got some Hodgdon Hi-Skor 700X. I'm looking for a load between 1200 and 1250 fps. I'm not looking for a "heavy duty" load that may damage my antique gun. If not that, what other powder?
3) I'm a tightwad, not a cheap skate. I've looked up the "reclaimed" shot. Is it worth the savings?
4) Wads. I'd like to have a 1 1/8 ounce load of #8's. What are some of the better wads? I don't have to have a Cadillac, but I don't want a Ford Falcon either. Just a decent wad at a decent price.
5) Hulls. I'm from an Era where the ultimate hull was a Win AA. I hear alot about the "Cheddite" hull. Are they worth the cost?
6) The loader comes with a "roll crimp" tool. Is the roll crimp worth the extra effort?
7) In my "Era", we had Win 209 primers and Rem 57 primers. This "Era", I only see the Win 209. Does the Win 209 now fit all hulls?
I'm sure I'll have more questions, but I'll start with these.

Ballistic products in Minnesota has everything you need. Lyman also just released their newest edition of the shotshell manual. Lots of 16 gauge loads in there.

If not that, what other powder? 700x is a good powder for 12ga target loads, its burn rate is to fast in the 16 for the velocity range you want and weight of charge. My old 2001 vintage IMR handloaders guide shows only 1 oz loads with 700x @1085 to 1220 max press in fed,rem and ww xpert hulls using wads you can't.buy anymore.
3) I'm a tightwad, not a cheap skate. I've looked up the "reclaimed" shot. Is it worth the savings? No

5) Hulls. I'm from an Era where the ultimate hull was a Win AA. Old AA's still are in my book I hear alot about the "Cheddite" hull. Are they worth the cost? I like feds better
6) The loader comes with a "roll crimp" tool. Is the roll crimp worth the extra effort?
I have2 16ga roll crimers but only roll crimp cut down hulls for 2 9/16" chambers.
7) In my "Era", we had Win 209 primers and Rem 57 primers. This "Era", I only see the Win 209. Does the Win 209 now fit all hulls? Pretty much , i keep a few 57.'s around for old Remington plastic hulls with the composite base wad but consider them a 1 shot suzie
I'm sure I'll have more questions, but I'll start with these. Mb

It’s the 6th edition. They just released it. Just ordered one! Sometimes, I need a nudge..... BUT.... that doesn't answer my question about the reclaimed shot! Apparently, it's "reclaimed" from trap/skeet ranges and has a tendency to be dirty! Anybody ever used it? Your experience. Is it worth the savings?

If you’re just looking to do some informal clay bird shooting where you’re not keeping score reclaimed shot is fine. But if you’re shooting for scores, or hunting live birds it is going to leave you wishing you’d bought better shot. Sportsman’s warehouse has the best price on shot that I’ve seen. About sixty bucks for a twenty five pound bag.

Does the Win 209 now fit all hulls? #2 700X too fast burning for any but the mildest 1 ounce loads, that probably wont cycle your Sportsman. #3 Reclaimed shot is fine for close range stuff ie: skeet of 16 yard trap, but don't pattern as well as new shot at longer ranges. #4 There few choices when it comes to 16 gauge wads, it is more will it fit than is X better than Y. #5 Winchester AA type compression-formed and one-piece Remington hulls were the cats meow, but neither is available. Cheddites and Federal field load hulls are the best of the currently available. Current Winchester and Browning 16's are loaded in Cheddite hulls. Once again its not so much which is best as which is available. Neither will crimp as nicely or last as long as the The older one piece hulls. #6 Never used one. #7 All primers available now are ostensibly "209 size", but Rio's are just enough larger that you can't use other primes in Rio hulls, and if you use Rio's in other hulls you will only be able to use RIO'S afterwards. Unless you get professionally cleaned and graphited shot you are wasting your time. "The Lead Miner is the only one I've seen yet who puts out a quality product and I think he is or has retired You have the second most expensive gauge to shoot, after the 410 bore, so just buy from BPI, load and shoot and enjoy. You don't reload these days to save much money with components as high as they are.

The Claybuster AA clone 16 gauge wad and the Remington SP16 wad only fit at all well in the pre-bankruptcy RemingtonGame load hulls, and truly ancient AA style Winchester hulls.
If you are acquiring new hulls, they are all straight walled. The only wads that fit straight walled hulls properly are the Gualandi SG16 and the B&P, called Z16 by Ballistic products. The same wads are available from Precision Reloading under different designation.

Martin i told you no on the reclaimed shot. 1. It's dirty 2. It's out of round 3. It's mixed so you will find steel in it. It will work at skeet and 16's your scored fall off in handicap. Both cabelas and scheels sell Eagle goes for 60 a bag around here. Mb

I used reclaim many years ago for target shooting because it was cheap, and I didn't have that much money in those days. I wouldn't think about buying it today. Bob is rite, it was a little dirty stuff from time to time and didn't pattern will. Here are pictures of a reclaim operation. Notice how deep they cut into the surface in the one picture. ![[Linked Image from i.postimg.cc]](https://i.postimg.cc/hPRZrHKT/Reclaim-01.jpg)

Reclaimed shot works like said above skeet 16 yard trap or backyard practice. When we were shooting league 16 yard trap I bought it by the ton from the Winchester range, cleaned and regraphited.
Light loads 700x works in my sxs and pumps, never tried it in a semi-auto.
BPI "advantages" manual has a lot of 16ga data
Roll crimps are great, but I find them to be a one time and done crimp. I roll crimp my Bismuth waterfowl and big shot predator loads. Target and general hunting loads get star crimped.
Most of my 16s have 2.5" chambers.
After the first shot the rest are just noise.
Make mine a Minaska
