A friend went to hospital and ct tech said 5mm so doc says it will pass, after 4 hospitals saying the first scan tech says 5mm it will pass. In dire pain and a fifth trip a surgeon rechecked new scan and it was actually 10mm, scheduled immediate surgery. So if first guy screws up then every opinion after is based on that until you get mad.

I’ve had several but no records by any means. I have 5 or more in my kidneys now. Two are 20mm, too large to pass. I had one turn to a bladder stone once that grew to the size of a golf ball. The doc went through Ole blue and busted it up. They are no fun at all! Rick

I've seen them squealing in the ER with those kidney stones. It looks very painful.

K. stones would be an ideal punishment for criminals. I've broken bones that weren't as painful. Only had the one, and had no idea what it was. I finally had a spell before bedtime and had to lay in the living room floor so I wouldn't roll around and fall. Had that black-and-white tunnel vision that happens with intense pain just before you pass out. I had dialed 9-1 and it miraculously stopped. Doctors finally had to roto rooter it out. Inside the kidney and too big to pass through the pipe. They said it looked like a big cockleburr Inside my kidney. They gave me the best, fastest working anesthesia I've ever had and it seemed like I had just closed my eyes for a 3 count and I woke up in a little dark room. And yes. The aftermath is pretty rough for a few days after. The little fragments look like broken yellow glass. Overall worst pain I've ever had

Been there, done that. They suck. Biggest one I had was 8mm. I was active duty at the time and they used ultrasound to bust it up. Laid me up for about 2 weeks.

4 mm was the size I was told. It is sore right now but tolerable with IBU. I have other higher potency pain killer if needed. Going to try to avoid that.Taking something to loosen everything up down there to make for an easier passing. Wife has been a saint. Me, not so much.

Also, when I was in the hospital after the surgery to remove the stone, I discovered that morphine doesn't work on me at all. I finally raised hell and they gave me Dilaudid. That worked.

That's funny - the ER folks initially gave me Dilaudid and they didn't work - so - they finally gave me morphine and that finally killed "most" of the pain.

Had 2 one in both kidneys.
They measured 13 mm and 28 long.
Got one out on the 15th and yesterday got the second. He managed to get a good sample from the second ans is getting it tested to see it's make-up.
Had a stint with the first with pull string and now just have a stint from kidney to bladder.
Thing is the whole time i had them didn't feel any typical pain most folks have, just had some when they moved ready to come out.
Feel good and will drive to town tomorrow just for fun.

My wife is just out of ICU that started with a stone, got infected, went septic. Stent involved which decompressed the kidney but revealed the infection and sepsis. Not a good time. We were fixing to fly home from Hawaii but ended up in the hospital. Still not sure when we can leave. I'll have to return home for business stuff but hate to leave her 'unattended'. good thing it wasn't me, don't handle pain as well.
I'm not cheap, I'm frugal.

The meat manager at work once told us about his kidney stone episode. Woke him from a sound sleep. Rolling on the couch in extreme pain, he told his wife to get dressed and drive him to the hospital.
"Not before I fix my hair and do my makeup."
45 minutes later they arrive, with Joe still suffering. Wife said all the nurses were complementing her on how beautiful she looked at 1:00AM!
"No good deed shall go unpunished!"

If its in the ureter, and gets stuck, the backup of urine pressure in the kidney causes a constant increasing dull back pain that cant be controlled and will have you groaning on the floor 24/7. A good urologist can zap it with a laser in the OR and it will pass in tiny fragments right away. No pain, no scars, you're sedated until its done. Google Holmium Yag Laser Lithotripsy for the details. Its waiting to get the surgery scheduled that is the hardest part. An ER doc is not competent to do it. There are other options, such as ultrasound, and mechanical stents to bypass the obstruction, which may also work. but again the hard part is waiting to get on the urologist's schedule. Dont worry, if you do nothing the pain will go away in several days-- when the kidney dies from overpressure.
If its stuck in the urethra, on the other hand, you get no agonizing dull back pain, only direct and severe sharp pain in the pecker when trying to pee, with blood in the urine. An ER doc may be able to help in that case by running a cath up to dislodge the stone. Drinking a lot of beer may help pass the stone if its not too spikey. Or not. Good luck.
Whatever the case, an xray and or CAT scan will tell you what kind of stone it is--either uric or calcium based. Calcium stones are radio opaque and show up on x-ray, uric stones are radio transparent and only show up on a CAT scan. If uric, allopurinol can reduce the uric acid in your body and largely prevent future stones. If calcium, probably diet is the only way to control them long term. I learned all this the hard way--hope you are more fortunate.
