I don't know all of the details. But an octagon barrel adds considerable weight. On a boomer like a .338, the octagon barrel could help reduce a good bit of recoil without adding a muzzle brake. And add a certain amount of "style" in the process, if that is your thing. Just noticed the vent rib. That would add a few additional ounces as well...

Yeah, I just have never seen a custom octagon barrel with a vent rib. Wonder who pulled that off and how expensive that was.
