Ffl charges me $20.
Everyone in nearest gun shop is a snobby dickhead.
So, I'd actually rather pay more, just to not have to deal with them.

Guns, vehicles and boots are alway bought after I examine them myself. Vehicles and boots are tried before buying. Who in the heck buys a vehicle sight unseen and has it delivered? I ordered one rifle through a local shop when Ruger introduced their Hawkeye 77 in .257 Bob. I’d been wanting a rifle in that cartridge for a long time. I had him get me the rifle, a set of reloading dies, and 100 brass all in one shot. Like most of my rifles, it’s never seen a factory shell in its entire life. Reon Bought my last 2 trucks, 3 snowmobiles, 1 atv and 2 motorcycles without even hearing them run or test drive. No issues. Many times

Had a great little LGS, but Roy came down with pancreatic cancer. I cried.
We have a LGS. Dad was a real estate entrepreneur and a small gun store on the side. When the 2 sons came of age, they took over the gun store. Those two have the local PD, SO and OHP wrapped around their finger. The boys (in their 60's now) are complete anal sphincters.....unless you're a LEO or a local high roller. FA opened on the outskirts of town. Opened by two local "ex" LEOs. Great bunch of guys. Friendly, fair prices and good products. The M boys did all they could to close them down....and finally succeeded after about 10 years! I'll spend extra money NOT to buy from M's! Atwood's is a local "farm & ranch" that carries a good supply of ammo and arms. I dislike Academy because their clerks seldom are knowledgeable about gun "stuff"! ("We don't have any .308 ammo, but we have 5.56, etc, etc, etc... 7.62×51...)
I have terminal OFS! I ain't buying squat I can't see and feel!

LGS here if you buy a gun he gives you a box of whatever ammo you want for it to.

Is this a comment on OP's post formatting skills or general writing ability? If so, +1. I spent 30 years averaging 58.5 hours per week working off of prints and electrical schematics and practically zero time on creative writing. Yup my writing skills are flawed. But let me ask you, what is inductive reactance? capacitive reactance? What does a diode do? What's a clock pulse timer? In bianary 1011 represents what decimal? You see, in my world you may write real pretty but from my perspective, you ain't to brite either. Different strokes for different folks bub. ya damn right EKC!!. The miss Beasley's of the spelling bee seem to ignore hands on knowledge of the real things. Are we going to weld, wire, machine, build?? or write a fuqking sonnet???

Reminds me of a set of tires I bought a couple years ago. I went on Tire Rack and priced tires for my truck. When I did the math I found that I coul buy them for about the same money right here in town and support a local guy. Fast forward a couple weeks and I hit a stone and punctured the sidewall and ruined a brand new tire. I went to the local guy where I bought them and asked if they had a road hazard warranty and he said yes. He replaced the tire a couple days later. When I thanked him for helping me out he said "try that with f**king Tire Rack!"

For years the nearest gunshop was a 2 plus hour round trip. Until I got a CC licence I always got a 3 day delay on a back ground check so 2 trips. Several years ago a local shop opened up. I became friends with the owner and now I order what I want by text messages.... He gives me an out the door price and sends me a text when it shows up. I pay cash to save him the 3% charge.
I stopped in the store mid morning last week. No one else in the store so we started to have a "how have you been doing" kind of friend conversation but I gave up after a few Miuntes because he was so busy texting out prices to customers. He is a pretty good gunsmith too so win win.

I always use local shops unless it's something they don't carry or cannot source in my time frame, which is usually the case. The money is a wash after fees.

I will buy local whenever I can. Unfortunately, my favorite shop that had a great reloading section has now decided to just sell bulk ammo. It’s stacked waist high on pallets throughout the place. Anymore, I find myself buying most of my components online. Just not enough inventory turns for them to keep space for reloading stuff I guess.

I am not averse to buying local, at all. But I seldom find anything which piques my interest even when driving over to Boise.
I decided I needed a Ruger MK IV. I found that at Cabelas. Years ago there was the big clearance on Vanguards at Walmart, I scored three in 243. And a 10-22 from Bi-Mart a very long time ago.
I found a Remington 700 5R in 260 online, at Cabelas. They had to ship it in to the Boise store. And there was another Remington 700 in 260, this one the MagPull model at Sportsman's. But I think I actually also found that one online.
So, most of my purchases are face to face if someone turns me onto something interesting. Or a friend like RJM texts me and offers something I absolutely can not walk away from. And some are spotted on Gunbroker.

A college kid started to go through the "10 items or less" checkout lane with about 20 purchases. The gal at the cash register said "You're either an English major and can't count- - - -or you're an engineering major and can't read!"

Being mostly interested in used guns, I buy them where I find them. Don’t pity the local guy for just doing the transfer. He gets cash for a few minutes’ work while I survey his inventory. More than once I’ve left the shop with more than I came for. I’m a notorious impulse buyer. 🫤

I'd love to have a good local gun shop. Unfortunately I don't. Good on you for the way you handled it. I agree with you and we have very few. While I'd love to support the local I don't see all that much sense in it when he is going to order what I want anyway. Let's see, I can buy a Tikka from him for $800 or I can buy one on-line for $600-$629 + $20 transfer fee. What would you do? We just sold a Tikka 22-250 for $650 no transfer fee, no shipping but state law won't let us out of charging the 7% state tax. There was a gun shop 40 miles East of here that had a whole rack full of Sauer 100s priced at $1000 each and a bunch of Tikkas at the prices that you mentioned. They closed their doors a few months back. That is good. I will buy locally every single time if the price is comparable. Not the same but comparable. In most cases where I live, they are not.

It can go both ways…
LGS that have great service, fair prices, good selection.
LGS that try to make all they can because they are the only game in town..
Some are still trying to recoup their money from trying to gouge on 22LR and 9mm ammo during covick…
