I took my new Miroku Winchester 1895 405 to the range the other day and brought along my custom 40 72 on an original 1885 Winchester action.
The 40 72 was designed by a friend using the modern Hornady 405 brass and using a Lilja 410 diameter barrel. I used this rifle to shoot BPCR silhouette. The rounds were some I had loaded in 2007 for the BPCR Nationals in Raton NM. The load consisted of a custom Jones bullet Mold loaded using 69.5 g of Swiss 3FG black powder. I did not write down the bullet weight on the box of cartridges but I assume they were around 400 g + or -. This load averaged 1261 fps and were a pleasure to shoot.
The 405 I loaded using Hornady 300 g bullets over imr 3031 powder. The average velocity was just over 2200 fps and they were not so pleasant to shoot. It was still a lot of fun though. I could shoot the BP 40 72 loads all day. Not so much the 405.
