I actually met quite a few 7mm PRC guys recently, it seems they like those longer, heavier bullets in it. But from alot of reading and researching the 7RM properly loaded holds its on out further than most guys (including me) can use any advantage it may have, I dont know. I like the idea of a 7mm/300 PRC just for grins.

Back in the mid eighties, had a private range where I could shoot a home made 12" sq plate. Hanging on chains. I had the 30-06 with the 200 Sierra and the 7mm RN with the 150 Partition. The 30-06 made the plate "react and swing more" than the 7 mag. Out to 500 yds. Not elk, but an observation. Apples to apples, the 150 in the '06 gave same (well, undetectable) results as the 7 mags. It may mean nothing on flesh though...hows that?

Not really a good comparison. Try that 7mag with 175s and you'll be surprised, especially in the difference in bullet drop. In my rifles I can get 300fps more from the 7mag 175gr than my '06 loaded with 200s.

Killed many elk with 300 WM Barnes 180 gr TSX, 7mm RM NP 160 and 30-06 180 gr Interlock, 180 NP and 165 TSX. Quickest kills were with 06.

Like it or hate it the 7mm magnum was the most over rated cartridge until the 6.5 Creedmoor came along..

I notice a lot of intimation that the 7MM RM is a hard kicker. I just don't see it that way. Comparable to a fully loaded 30-06 it just isn't that bad. A 300 Weatherby magnum or a 338 WM is to me where recoil starts getting noticeable but only then at the bench. I seldom notice recoil or noise when shooting at game. I have shot elk with 270, 30-06,338 Win mag, 300 Win mag, 7MM RM and 35 Whelen. If I absolutely had to say which I thought killed elk better I would say the Whelen had an edge but I wouldn't use it at the ranges I would shoot a 7MM RM or 300 WM. Of the bunch I like the 30-06 best. I still have it and it is my lucky rifle.

Shrapnel, honest question. Have you used the 7MM RM much to hunt with?

Like it or hate it the 7mm magnum was the most over rated cartridge until the 6.5 Creedmoor came along.. All I can say is the 7mm Rem Mag is one of the best open country chambers for western Nebraska and Wyoming hunting. It is much like the 257 Wby but delivers high velocity impact at long distances with 140 gr-180 gr loads. It certainly is not overrated in my experiences, in fact I’d call it one of the best in terms of what it can do on both light and heavy game close in and far away. A 7mm anything is tough to better in the field, especially when it is hurling a 140 gr bullet at 3,325 fps at pronghorn or mule deer, or a 160 gr load well over 3,000 fps at elk.

That’s pretty well said. Still hasn’t been much if anything created that whoops it by any meaningful margin, and if you load your own, lots can be done.

7mm RM and 300 WM are excellent cartridges in open country and long range hunting and I used them a lot on elk in WY, CO and OR but 30-06 does kill well under 350 yards in my experience.

If a guy wanted one rifle to pretty much do it all in North America with game large to small and various terrains coast to coast a 7 RM with a good 160+ gr bullet would be near the top of choices.
Yes the same can be done with the 30-06 or several other calibers but the 7 mag will still do it with likely better trajectory and less wind drift.
How much better a guy needs is entirely subjective but a 7 RM is never a bad choice
